Chase Case 5

Still near the storm near Julesburg, and caught a distant view of the brief tornado. I-76 still working like a charm thanks to the great sight lines in the area. Should be able to merge onto I-80 East and follow it at least as far as Ogallala before having to change direction. What a lucky sequence of events! :)

I honestly didn't think it would happen with 20+ degree spreads. The best spreads are way out in central and east Kansas into east Oklahoma. Totally misjudged the dryline, but happy I am on this cell off I-80. I have to assume this is a high base tornado. Should be moving into a relatively better environment. As the evening moves on those spreads should come down, so I plan on sticking with this cell as the environment becomes more conducive for more cells. Waiting on the tail end charlie to fire up along the flank of this cell.

Rolling east on I-80 near Big Spring, NE. Have a great view of cell north of I-80 with a distinct lowering. Maybe a tornado. Also have visual on towers forming to my east and southeast.

Have passed through Imperial, and am southeast bound on hwy 6 to hwy 34 headed in the direction of McCook, NE. Going to play the new development going up quickly on the southeast side of the surface low in northeast CO.

Yarrrr! It appears a storm is breaking the cap just to my northeast! I will latch on to this cell for now and follow it unless another cell develops nearby and becomes dominant. I really liked how backed the flow is to my northeast. Wow, that cell in southwest appears to be a monster.

Gotta love the high altitude targets! Dew points don't matter as much out there.

I guess not. Elevation can't be much more than 3000'. Now, if we were up on the Palmer Divide, or further up the Cheyenne ridge I would totally agree with you. East of Sterling elevation drops off as we get further into the plains. Im not saying it is impossible for it to happen, but I normally like spreads less than 10-15. It doesn't really matter now, cuz we scored!!!:D

Pretty sure I got to the SE side of the SW NE supercell just as it started producing and followed it along I-80 and now to the northeast. Yay! Victory after previous busts.

Well. . .Gotta head out for the night. Thanks for the great case Charles!! I will check the reports later. I love chasing the northeast plains, and the cheyenne ridge. Zero Trees;)
