Chase Case 5

Thought I might've recognized the date so I checked. Although this is not the date I thought it was, it is remarkably similar to the one I'm thinking of (I'll tell after the results are out).

I bailed off I-80 at Roscoe, NE., took county roads through Keystone to bypass the dam and the attendant traffic, now am near the hook. That's as good as I can get!

Once this goes over NE-61/92, it's back down to I-80 and blast east. No way can I do anything with the roads northeast of Arthur.

YEEHAAAA!!! I've been gone all afternoon, and look what I just got back to! Just a-hangin' out in Lewellen and the storm comes to me! Though not exactly, because naturally I dropped south before the thing even moved into Nebraska and have been caravaning with Kurt and Ben.

Given my position, a bad road network, the fact that I am in a stern chase, and a long distance to storms to the south, looks like I may be just about ready to wrap things up for the day, unless something else crops up. Great day so far!

23z update: I think I'm out of position and screwed! New storm going up over Ogallala, where I sat for most of the day, and the storm down in KS would take until 01z to intercept at best. Going to hope the stuff near me here in McCook can get it's act together.

0z update: I should just turn around save myself a longer drive back to Denver, but I'm a glutton for punishment. Dropped south from McCook to Oberlin KS, and heading east on hwy 36 hoping to see some development from the stuff straddling the KS border. Can jog north on hwy 283 or nrtheast in hwy 383 if anything interesting happens.

I am chasing the dominant supercell in northern Kansas. I guess I missed out on the tornadoes. I am kinda surprised this didn't produce. Maybe it will before dark. I missed the best storms in Nebraska by taking a risk on the dryline in Kansas. You win some and you lose some. At least the cap broke.

I missed the rapid updates but I was at the split of 80 and 76 in NE at 20z where I would have intercepted the storm and tracked with it to the north east as best as I could.

Here are the reports for June 10, 2004. I did chase this day in real life and was fortunate enough to see the Big Springs, NE tornado. If anyone has any pictures or video feel free to post them. Congrats to all who “sawâ€￾ the Big Springs tornado. Anyone who was on the northern Kansas storm gets virtual steaks as well for this case! This storm moved on to produce several tornadoes after dark in north central Kansas and south central Nebraska (2Z and 3Z radar is included below). Thanks for participating!

Charles thanks for posting this case. Appreciate the time and effort it must have taken.

My result for this virtual case = virtual fail!
In reality, if I'd been sitting in Ogallala as long as I did, would have to think I could not have avoided the visual queues from that storm and would have moved the 15 miles west it would have taken to intercept.

I honestly don't know how I got as lucky as I did, because driving north from Limon to Brush I thought I was dead in the water. I just saw the storm go up to the northeast and decided to go after it because it was the only show at the time. I'd say it played out rather well. :D ;) Why can't I be this lucky in real life???

The date I was thinking of was June 26th, 2009. An early day supercell tracked along nearly the exact same path as the "big one" in SW NE in this case.
