Chase Case #4 (2010 Version)

I stayed to far west for to long. Having left DDC at 17z and heading to McPherson, no way I could have gotten up to Salina in time to get on the storms that fired there and storm motions give me no hope of trying to catch them.

So, I'm headed east on I-70 towards Junction City, KS hoping that something south of the current show fires, but it now looks like a moderate risk for bust for me.

Surface data, satellite, outflow from KS storms, and approaching forcing all suggest that far southwest IA is about to blow also. Am heading southwest from Adair to Villesca, IA, at 22Z.

I agree. Maybe I should be going for the obvious, namely, the storm moving up out of northeast Kansas into Nebraska, but man...dewpoints in the environment it's moving into look really crappy, and that storm to its southeast is likely to interfere. So instead, like a crazy man, I'm scurrying back to Omaha, where the moisture is better and that arch of TCu's is nearest, and then I'll probably cross the river into southwest Iowa. No destination other than that--I'll play my cards along the way, taking my cues from those developing towers. Call me a fool, but what's a chase case if not a chance to either make mistakes without beating my head against a wall, or come up looking like a genius and learning from it in the bargain.

After seeing the cell fire near Salina I hopped on 77 and headed north out of Florence to intercept near Junction City, KS. Will be keeping an eye on the storm going up near Newton and will bail south if it intensifies.

With my target of Concordia, KS I shot east on hw 9 and caught the tornado in Clay Center, KS. I'll stay with this one as long as it looks healthy and can drop down the dryline to the next cells if I need to.

After watching the storm start to build down near Bennington would have started dropping south on hwy 15 from Fairbury. Should have at least made it to Clay Center if not farther south in time. Now in Clay Center as tornado passes just west of town.

Being at Junction City, KS at 2030Z, I was able to make the intercept at Clay Center at 2143. Sticking with the grandaddy storm that started in Hutchinson and is tracking NNE rapidly. Backed away east after intercept to head north on US 77 to reintercept between Marysville, KS and Beatrice, NE. Got lucky today.

It'll be tough to keep up with this storm motion, but at least I'm on the non-hail side and it doesn't look too rain-wrapped yet.

Either we grouped together or we trailed each other. High five!

I missed the 18z update so I havent repositioned since than. But, in real life if I would have seen that CU field developing I would have left Omaha then and headed SW. I am now south of Beatrice, NE preparing to intercept from the north.
