Its been awhile since I have posted in stormtrack so please have patience with me as I learn the new rules for posting. Hopefully I will be granted access to target area eventually but for now I just wanted to pop in and say hi. I wrote the big essay and reposted it on my blog as many things have changed since I was last here.

Essay

Storm season has officially begun here on the Canadian Prairies so you will notice some new and some old things on my blog for those of you who remember me (saskatoonscanner)

Yesterday was a busy day around here, tornadoes were photographed and the community is buzzing with excitement. We now have a very active group on Facebook to go along with the Yahoo group.

Here is the round up of stories and footage from yesterday

Thanks

Jared

Another tornadic day in Saskatchewan today, this time north of Saskatoon in a town called Hafford, Karen MacNutt shot some rather shaky but amazing footage, video and stills for her first catch as a new member of Canadian Prairie Storm Chasers http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=192568494125362

Feel free to join our group on fb as the season is just getting under way. We are looking towards Tuesday evening, as a possible chaser convergence/meet up in Regina to prepare for storms Wednesday. It could be sooner or later, however June 30th marks the 99th anniversary of the most devestating tornadic event in Canadian history here in Regina. The 1912 Regina Cyclone that destroyed the fastest growing metropolis at the time west of Chicago. " In the end, 28 people died during the terrible storm, and over $1.2 million in property damage occurred. 2,500 people found themselves homeless by the end of the day." -http://scaa.usask.ca/gallery/regina/central/cyclone.html

You've linked to a private video for christs sake! :-) But here's her yt-clip:

It seems like this was a chance encounter rather than a chase. How was the environment like, e.g. landspout or meso? From just the video I find it hard to tell.

I should be in Manitoba and/or Sask. by wednesday for this week's setup. It is looking good for a multiple day setup. The original plan was to chase all this weekend in the US and then complete the week in the prairies, but the car failed thursday just before leaving - the car should be ready monday to go for the prairies. That will be old time chase style without GrL and not much internet coverage (beside Manitoba of course).

Been really interested in the middle to latter portion of next week for quite some time. The models, especially the GFS, are showing the potential for a few set-ups in Saskatchewan/Manitoba. Looks like a real good pattern for severe weather.

If the heat ever arrives on the northern prairies there are going to be some major fireworks. So much water laying around, everywhere.
We have had a few interesting shots of weather in Alberta and a lot of hail already.

This little beauty rolled out of the foothills on the first day of summer, near Rocky Mountain House.

I didn't see it being marked as private anywhere, in fact I was just sharing the same link someone else posted. Anyhow, I'd rather youtube any day over fb so thanks for posting that link.

As far as whether it was landspout or meso, I watched it on radar, it had a big hook and echo tops near 50k. Definitely a severe thunderstorm with rotation. It seemed to keep its strength all the way off the radar screen so there might even be more footage out there, somewhere.

So the heat is back on tomorrow with highs finally reaching that magical number 29C which some say is the trigger point for the extremely damaging tornadic events here in Saskatchewan to occur. Nevertheless, local chasers have been talking about this set up for days already now and have planned a meet up/chaser convergence in Regina Tuesday evening at 7pm "Brewsters South". Fittingly, many are planning to head out into the wild open roads of Saskatchewan in search of landing the "Great One" on Wednesday. May I remind that Thursday, June 30th marks the 99th annaversary of the Regina Cylcone of 1912 that wiped out the fastest growing city in North America, west of Chicago, at the time. Still standing as the most devastating tornado/disaster in Canadian history.

Happy storm chasing and keep looking up!

Jared

Wednesday certainly has potential in Saskatchewan. Wishing you the best there.

I think you guys need to make the trek east to southern Manitoba on Thursday. CAPE values around 5,000 J/KG along with 40-50 kts of bulk shear. The cap looks to break around supper time as some energy moves in aloft. Definitely supercell potential in the evening before things potentially merge into a severe MCS.

Two days of chasing and caught some spectacular lightning, had a chaser convergence and ended up with an amazing solar storm on the way back. I've posted everything on my blog but these are the highlights:
