I'd pick surface winds map: from that you can know where is low pressure, where are boundaries, where is the best convergence zone: and those are the best pragmatic things to know in chasing if you have anything else.

Well, if we were chasing ONLY on a 500MB map with no knowledge of anything except the map we are looking at... I'm betting someone would be chasing this day - http://69.14.190.10/images/500_map.GIF
I'm still stickin with EHI - or does it have to be a one dimensional variable? If it's one dimensional only, I'd agree on a high resolution SFC map...HAltschule
