CHASE CASE 6

  • Thread starter Thread starter Matt Gingery
  • Start date Start date
I am hanging tight in Canadian, TX just south of the retreating front. It appears there are cumulis towers developing along the front. I guess I will wait for a supercell to develop and mature and jump on it.

I'm wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy late getting in on this, but in reading through the information and updates, I would've likely chosen a target in SW IA. I wanted to move south as I saw early afternoon updates, but it looks like if I had stayed where I first went I would have some decent storms to be chasing right now.

SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK

THE NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER HAS ISSUED A
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH FOR PORTIONS OF

NORTHEAST IOWA
EASTERN MINNESOTA
WESTERN WISCONSIN

EFFECTIVE THIS WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING

HAIL TO 2 INCHES IN DIAMETER...THUNDERSTORM WIND GUSTS TO 70
MPH...AND DANGEROUS LIGHTNING ARE POSSIBLE IN THESE AREAS.

THE SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH AREA IS APPROXIMATELY ALONG AND 45
STATUTE MILES EAST AND WEST OF A LINE FROM 15 MILES WEST
NORTHWEST OF KENNEDY WISCONSIN TO 60 MILES SOUTH SOUTHWEST OF
ROCHESTER MINNESOTA.

REMEMBER...A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH MEANS CONDITIONS ARE
FAVORABLE FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS IN AND CLOSE TO THE WATCH
AREA. PERSONS IN THESE AREAS SHOULD BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR
THREATENING WEATHER CONDITIONS AND LISTEN FOR LATER STATEMENTS
AND POSSIBLE WARNINGS. SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS CAN AND OCCASIONALLY
DO PRODUCE TORNADOES.

DISCUSSION...SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS CONTINUE TO INTENSIFY ALONG
SURFACE BOUNDARY ACROSS EASTERN MN. GIVEN THE AMOUNT OF
BULK SHEAR A FEW OF THESE SFC BASED CELLS MAY PRODUCE AN ISOLATED

TORNADO OR TWO ACROSS PORTIONS OF
E MINN AND W WISC THROUGHOUT THE PERIOD ALTHOUGH THE
MAIN RISK BEING LARGE HAIL/DAMAGING WIND. THIS ACTIVITY WILL LIKELY
PERSIST THROUGH THE EVENING HOURS WITH A CONTINUED RISK OF LARGE
HAIL AND DAMAGING WINDS AS STORMS PASS THROUGH LOW LEVEL THETA-E
AXIS.

Based on 20z sfc data...looks like I need to continue west and set up in the Liberal -Meade KS area ....looks like a good place to be with a theta poke and backing sfc winds in that general area...and slightly veered sfc winds south.

Been sitting in Slapout, OK all day. I am going drive 1 hr SW back to Spearman, TX and plan on staying right on the NW moving boundary. Cu field is getting very intense right over my house back in Borger.

Since this is so close to home and I am not regonizing it, kinda worries me. Just a few more updates. I wont be able to check this probably till late tonight, so what ever goes up in the TX Panhandle I will be going after.

Time to start going west to follow the front. I'll be heading to Lipscomb, TX while watching conditions and waiting for a supercell to pop up.

20z: Just arrived in Gage. Liking the boundary a little further to the west looks like I will meander West and set up once more in Darrouzett, TX. Will monitor Sat and Radar on the way in case i need to change route.

I am still chasing the storms in south west KS. (tail end) I think I will stay with them and see if they produce but I am not liking that they are lining out. I could race to the better area in the panhandles but I am already on these storms so I will follow them untill more data comes out.

TORNADO WATCH
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK

THE NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER HAS ISSUED A
TORNADO WATCH FOR PORTIONS OF

SOUTHWEST KANSAS
NORTHWEST OKLAHOMA
TEXAS PANHANDLE

EFFECTIVE THIS WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING FROM 330 PM UNTIL
1100 PM CDT.

...THIS IS A PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS SITUATION...

DESTRUCTIVE TORNADOES...LARGE HAIL TO 4 INCHES IN DIAMETER...
THUNDERSTORM WIND GUSTS TO 80 MPH...AND DANGEROUS LIGHTNING ARE
POSSIBLE IN THESE AREAS.

THE TORNADO WATCH AREA IS APPROXIMATELY ALONG AND 70 STATUTE
MILES EAST AND WEST OF A LINE FROM 35 MILES NORTH NORTHEAST OF
DODGE CITY KANSAS TO 50 MILES SOUTHEAST OF AMARILLO TEXAS. FOR A
COMPLETE DEPICTION OF THE WATCH SEE THE ASSOCIATED WATCH OUTLINE.

REMEMBER...A TORNADO WATCH MEANS CONDITIONS ARE FAVORABLE FOR
TORNADOES AND SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS IN AND CLOSE TO THE WATCH
AREA. PERSONS IN THESE AREAS SHOULD BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR
THREATENING WEATHER CONDITIONS AND LISTEN FOR LATER STATEMENTS
AND POSSIBLE WARNINGS.

DISCUSSION...SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP THIS
AFTERNOON AND EVENING ACROSS PARTS OF SOUTHWEST KS AND THE TX
PANHANDLE... SPREADING EASTWARD INTO NORTHWEST OK. AIR MASS OVER
THIS REGION IS BECOMING VERY UNSTABLE AS LOW LEVEL MOISTURE SPREADS
NORTHWESTWARD BENEATH EXTREMELY STEEP LOW/MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES.
INCREASING VERTICAL SHEAR PROFILES THROUGH THE EVENING WILL PROMOTE
SUPERCELL STORMS CAPABLE OF VERY LARGE HAIL...DAMAGING WINDS...AND
STRONG TORNADOESS

Oh well, way to north to try to get back to the panhandle area. I will have to keep with the one I brought to the dance. I will be sticking with the storm cell north of Topeka. Make my position in Nemaha county KS.
