CHASE CASE #3

From Hebron, NE I 'meso-dropped' down to the Belleville, KS storm - it's tapping into all that flow to the south so I'd be surprised it if doesn't produce.

We are on the cell straddling the KS/OK border just south of Medicine Lodge, KS. Looks good on radar but no tornado warning. I may have picked the wrong target on this one as the storms in W OK and NC KS are producing. :(

Same here...Don't think I would have made it to either of those complexes, north or south, but maybe these "in between" storms will get their act together before the last update...and dark.

Looks like I should never have left Sioux Falls, SD! But I should have been on or at least in front of the storm that tracked along the boarder and hopefully followed it back into SD where these current storms are. Looking forward to the results..

Any possibility of a radar update?

On the personal side, how you feeling, Danny? Those meds starting to kick in for you?

Yes have been tracking the storm near the KS/OK border for quite some time and it finally went tornado warned near Attica and has produced a evidently long lived tornado. We are in prefect position for the intercept! :D

Better too Bob. I think I am gonna make it ;)

Results very soon!

Thanks for that, Danny. I couldn't be happier with the storm I'm on. My original plan to head for South Dakota would have been a good option, too, but this storm is a monster.

Glad you're on the mend, mate!

Hmm... I'd like to think I'd have gotten to the action near Yankton, SD, who knows if I would've or not. Since it's a virtual chase I'll assume I saw recognized that the storm up near Yankton was gonna produce and will eat my virtual steak. Either way I was in good position.

Hope you're doing ok Danny!

I actually looked at that date going through the NWS Event Index looking for this event and never realized that was the day. I don't remember much from 2004 besides the May 21 and 22 events which I will never forget. I know the SPC discusion was familiar but that was it. Thanks Danny for putting this together.

In chase case...nailed the biggie tornadoes near Conway Spr. KS ....but did chase this day in RL and got a total of 5 tornadoes up in the Concordia KS area. I remember this day well. Sat in Wellington much of the morning of the chase and looked over data. Convinced myself that the northern KS target was better than the southern KS one. Both targets produced but should have stayed camped out at Wellington and stayed patient that day. Gotta go where the strong shear and instability are matched up the best....

Looks like I did pretty well. I tracked the cell in N KS and it looks to have produced, so in the fantasy storm chasing world, I'm happy with my target, forecast and chase. Thanks for putting together another great scenario, it's helping make these negative degree days in Colorado go by a little quicker! :D

Darn right Scott! The -10 at my house this morning is just a tad chilly.

For the first time in a while I was not to far east on one of these cases. I did not chase this day in real life, but virtually bagged the cyclic tornadic cell near Concorida. Yes waitress...I will have the virtual sauteed mushrooms with my virtual filet mignon! :D

Thanks to Danny for a putting this together.

Nice I nailed the tornadoes on the S KS storm as it produced some of the better tornadoes of that day.

I did not chase this day in real life too, I left before on may 18th; in this virtual chase probably I would have intercepted Belleville-Hebron tornadoes.

I consider this virtual chase a "partial failure" because on may 29th 2004 the most incredible storms were along the dryline in Harper-Anthony-Conway Spring territory. Some of the tornadoes dropped down were simply huge and outstanding. Chasing in north-central Ks/southern Ne that day meant losing those fantastic Crystal/Conway Spring monsters, even if you could get at least one nice cone near Jamestown, Ks and Belleville.
Actually in real life I don't know what I would have done: you never know how many things can make you change your plan. Maybe I would have arrived only to south central Ks because the day before I was chasing too far away. It would be interesting to hear the opinion of those who chased in SC Kansas that day.

I didn't chase this day either, but a good friend did chase with limited resources and scored big. Ted Keller chased with some friends and scored multiple tornadoes near the town of Anthony, Ks. Here is links to his videos of this event near the Wichita area.
