Chase Case 12

Yeah agreed Andrea! This was a split system, the more visual intercepts were across SE Kansas, and extreme NE Oklahoma in Osage County. N. Kansas did not play out as anticipated, although there was some HP cells that produced. . .

I'm not sure if I would have intercepted or not. My nowcaster would probably have given me information on which cell had the best rotation, but even though I was in position to intercept it, I'm not sure if I would have been able to maneuver around the cell that was SE of it. hmnmm

Anything is possible in a virtual chase Jared. Maybe on this chase you had a high performance vehicle that is both on and off road. I think if you were within 50 miles of a location at any given time, you should be credited with an intercept, so enjoy your steak. . .

*If anyone has any pics of this event, feel free to post them*

Well, not sure if I would've actually gone after the storms in north central Kansas. I said earlier that they didnt look all that impressive from a regional radar view, but if I coulda zoomed in maybe I would've seen something and gone after them.

Yeah, agreed. I didnt like how they looked either but since I was moving south of Beatrice I would have had no choice anyway.

Well, who knows how timing would have played out in real life, but I was headed for Independence, KS earlier in the day. Maybe I would have gotten lucky enough to get ahead of the storm or possibly just behind and catch up. Not sure if would have definitely seen the tornado, but I'm satisfied I ended up in the right area. This was a great case! Thanks for organizing it.

I'm more than satisfied about this event.... a nice supercell produced a tornado right over me.... :)

That's also a nice catch by Fred.

Yeah, this was a pretty frustrating day. Hardly anything over NE Kansas managed to develop and when it tried to, it was gone in a blink of an eye. It was very windy that day and I do remember how disappointed I was on how low the dewpoints were. In terms of the hype, all the local schools canceled their afternoon and evening activities anticipating a very active evening in the weather department...it turned out to be nothing but blue skies in Lawrence, KS.

We had no data on this day and nearly left the "Salina" storm as it looked outflow dominant early, but we turned around as it organized quickly, and I"m glad we did. Reed Timmer called and told me the dews were mixing out and they ditched the NC KS target and headed to the SE KS target and saw nothing. I think most of the tornado reports in SE KS were BS as no one saw anything down there here on Stormtrack (those that were chasing) and were likely straight line winds.

We saw the "Manchester" tornado and another weak one immediately to our west 1/2 mile, while the Manchester one was to our due E/NE.

It was one of the many times I was paranoid in the bear's cage. :D We ditched this storm as we lost it in Clay Center (and tree branches were getting pulled off of huge trees). The north road was closed so everyone had to move east and then back north, so we opted for the isolated Manhattan supercell, which looked like garbage. Not a bad day though!

That day's reports: http://stormtrack.org/forum/showthread.php?t=8506&highlight=4/6/2006

Based on the speed with which the Salina storm took off northeast, I'll call it a virtual "very likely" for me that I intercepted at Clay Center. My position and movement would have put me at Bala, ten miles or so east-southeast of Clay Center at 21:15 with a clear view of the storm's action area. I'm pretty sure in RL I'd have been at Clay Center by 21:30 in time for the events, FWIW.

Well based on the reports there's a chance I saw a tornado, but I actually chased this day in SE KS and didn't see any naders.

Since this is v-chasing, I'll take credit for the north central KS storm. I was in position, but in rl it prob would have gotten away from me before reaching the NE line. Nice case, Matt. Thanks for putting it up. I've got another one I'll be posting soon.

I got too busy to keep up with this case after the initial batch of data. But it doesn't matter, because this time there were no tornadoes along the warm front, and I was committed much too far east to move over to Kansas from my initial position. So with my position I might have seen some good hailers (as I did in real life the next day), but that would have been it. Oh well - only a short drive on what turned out to be an over-hyped day. (In real life my drive was even shorter, because I did not chase on this day.)
