Chase Case #13

Have been sitting in Montevideo for about an hour throwing the football around and watching data. Hey Brandon you are welcome to stop by and shoot the breeze.;)

My cell floated away up into Canada, so I've positioned near Grand Forks, ND. I thinks I'll stay put until the rt chase begins tomorrow. I have excellent road options w, s, se, e, and n from here. I'm intrigued by sfc obs se of my present location, but with 20+ 850mb temps further south, it's gonna take some low level lift to get things going down there. Any OFB's and sfc convergence will probably play a pivotal roll in that area. I prefer the rapid height falls with the approaching sfc low and backed sfc winds n of the warm front, though those 70+ Tds south of me are attractive. If things take off south along the WF, I'll have a window of opportunity to reposition, but if I move south now, anything going up north of me might be difficult to position for. I'll sit out here parked next to a field under the wide open sky and wait, enjoying the peaceful space and clear air David Hoadley-style :).

Well, having just arrived in Sioux Falls, SD from O'neill, NE, I'm not too eager to move having seen nothing that captured my eye on the latest update. I may mosey on into MN and head toward Worthington, MN keeping an eye on anything that pops up to my west or NW. Water vapor imagery seems to indicate a boundary stretching across NE/KS and up into SW MN. Hopefully this will be the focus for some intense convection soon! Surface temps are still very high which makes me wonder if I should have targeted further north (Thinks of Paul up in Fargo, ND). I think today may bee a MN/IA day. I'm going to push into MN, where I've never chased in reality and hope for the best. There are decent road options at Worthington. I will await further updates here. Good luck to all!

Alright! I think we will have a little time to do that. I am not sure about Dick, but I have been on the road since 5 this morning and I need to get out and stretch. My A$$ is falling asleep and I hate that feeling on those long, non-stop drives. I hope this chase pays off for the distance I drove today! I'll have to find a hotel room tonight, as I will need to rest before making the long trip back to Wichita.

In reality, I have only chased once in MN and that was on a chase vacation in July of 2003. That is the only time I chased in the state, but I hope to do more of it this year as I am planning a Northern Plains/Canada chase vacation around the end of June or early July.

I'm moving Northwest just a tad from Rochester to Faribault, MN along I-35. Looks like the boundary is a little further north than what the sfc/radar overlay shows. I'll sit in Faribault until I see something that looks viable devlop along or south of the boundary. Hopefully the boundary stalls just south of the Twin Cities, I'd hate to follow a storm into that mess. Love the ESE sfc winds along and just N of the boundary in SE MN, I think this will be the sweet spot for a potential tornado or two later, Twin Cities could be in trouble later.

Crap, I fell asleep in the car for the last 3 hours so I missed an update. I'm going to start cruising NW out of Des Moines towards Spencer, IA to hopefully be in place as things start popping.

I like the moisture tongue I'm seeing creep north into central Minnesota. Also the sfc winds are a little more backed there, so I am going to start heading ENE from my position slowly towards Wilmar, MN and eventually towards St. Cloud, waiting for initiation along the way.

Not in any real hurry to go anywhere, despite the veering winds. We're mosey-ing over to Sioux Falls, SD. Still like the moisture and upper wind profiles in eastern SD.

Yeah, what a difference 3 hours makes! I don't think anything will fire off the dryline any longer, as there is little convergence. I'm leaning towards the cooler temps aloft closer to the warm front (currently at 500mb -7 is horrendous IMO) and will head off towards Fergus Falls, MN a little further north of where you are at. It was good seeing you though!

I know, occasionally, that the low-level jet for the Northern Plains is often times underdone on the models by 10-20 knots, so I'll bank on that...but if it doesn't, I'll hope that this projected weak LLJ, coupled with the semi-weak sfc winds, can be overcome by deep-layer shear for tornadoes where I'm at.

I am still hanging along the warm front. Moved a bit west and am hanging in Milbank SD. Notice some action popping across the west side of the state behind the trough axis, probably oragraphically initiated. I am going to hang here, I see a broad area that some isolated cells could pop up.

Well, I have just now reached the outskirts of Souix Falls, SD. After driving for so long to make it here, I need to stop and stretch my legs for a while. I think I'll see if Verne, Eric, and Michael Carlson want to grab a bite to eat. I also think Marc might be here somewhere. Maybe he can join us too. At least we can exchange some tornado stories while we wait for the next update.

BTW, good idea to do a live chase case. This could be intersting. I have to work, but I will be able to see most of it.

Better go in and grab a bite to eat...that will surely get things to pop !! Works like a charm. Just have this gut feeling that I will be fighting with the HP issue today. Unless we can somehow get some speed increases with the next appraoching wave.
