What causes NLDN to register false lightning strikes when there are no thunderstorms around? I have noticed this a lot in recent days. Currently several in the midwest far away from thunderstorms. I understand the bolt from the blue phenomena of lightning striking up to 25 miles outside of a storm. But these are farther than that.

I see this on WxWorx occasionally, usually with an intense MCS. Seems that when there are hundreds of new strikes coming in, a coordinate or two gets botched from time to time, resulting in a random strike plotted 100-200 miles away from the parent activity. Maybe a glitch in the data stream leaving off a digit or two in a strike coordinate?
