06/09/05 TALK: High Plains

Just got a call from Darin Brunin, Damar got hit with, damage being reported. He sounded pretty excited, with 2 tornados on the ground at once. Described as beautiful. He will update further as they are still on these.

Yeah, they'll have a story to tell... if anyone there is left. :(

That storm is STILL healthy, though it's showing signs of going linear. The new storm to the southwest is getting spun up pretty quick now with a strong hail core and a good GTG. Nebraska cell is turning classic, though it has to contend with all the crap popping in front of it. Very busy day for those out chasing!

2 RAIN WRAPPED TORNADOES SPOTTED

The worst thing...rain wrapped tornadoes. Makes them nearly impossible to see. Very bad news for those out ahead of these tornadoes.

Rook storm is interesting now... looks linear on radar, until you look at the velocites. It's basically operating like a giant tail-end-charlie now. And it STILL has a huge GTG on the storm relative velocites with a massive off-the-chart VIL in the hailcore. Krikey this is an amazing storm!

Actually... hook echoes are by no means an indicator of tornadoes. Many supercells that are non tornadic produce hook echoes. Velocities on the DDC storm don't impress me at the moment (6:31pm) so I would be surprised if a tornado is on the ground...

Busy day for Rooks County Kansas, will be interesting to see the damage survey and the PNS statement, if and when they do one, to see how many actual tornadoes did occur in Rooks County. NWS Hastings Reports.

I'm sure we have a tornado on the ground if continues.
Remember what VORTEX project taught us.... only ~10% of supercells even produce tornadoes. Hook echo just means rotation aloft, and that may not have a whole lot, if anything, to do with tornado formation...depending on what researcher you ask.

Playing with WDSS-II here at the lab...wish I could post some pics, but the SoM machine is being dumb. Anyways, just went through the tilts at KDDC, storm looks like it is reorganizing. There is a BWER through the storm (though it has ~25-30 dbZ...HP BEAST!)...and a good convergence signiture at the two lowest tilts. Rotation aloft didn't look too impressive, but I think a lot of the velocities are screwed up. Wouldn't be surprised to see this one have another push and maybe move!
