McDonalds?
Subway?

I figure it has to be one of those two. I guess I'm mostly interested to see if there is any possible way McDonalds isn't the winner.

What else do you have?

Sonic is quite frequently encountered in the plains... but I doubt ahead of those two.

I hit Cracker Barrel and HuHot up whenever possible; however, I am not a "grab and go" fast food fan unless there are literally no other options.

Mind if I divert the conversation from restaurants to vending machines for a moment?

BIG TEXAS CINNAMON ROLLS! Yum. Not sure if they actually have those in Texas. I think they're baked in Chicago.

McDonalds for me, at least this past year. As much as I generally dislike McDonalds, their chicken selects have been a tolerable zero sugar, low-carb option (relatively speaking, among fast food options), easy to eat on the road, and available pretty much anywhere.

Every town with a population over 1000 seems to have a Subway and I've found them to be a great pick for chase food as you can get a healthy option that doesn't leave you feeling run down hours later like the greasy junk from other fast food chains. Grab a foot long sub before initiation. Eat half of it while checking data. It keeps well too, so you can eat the other half while you're watching the storm on the side of a dirt road a few hours later.

I'm with Skip. Subway is a winner becasue it can feed you now and later when you're in the middle of nowhere. Plus the wife likes it becasue you can get some vegetables. Speaking of which, I think we'll stop and get Subway in a few minutes. I don't anticipate there being many places to eat in Montana later this evening!

Subway all the way! Gas station food, Taco Bell, and a few other things seem like horrible ideas and I don't know why you'd deliberately play Russian Roulette with your bowels on a chase day.

Another vote for Subway. Their food is a 'known quantity, and is unlikely to put you in the hospital. Apart from the occasionally absurd salt content, they are reasonably healthy and don't represent a big change from my usual diet. Last but not least, the value is tolerable (and far higher than most burger joints.)

Quiznos is the other chain I'll routinely hit. Their stuff is tastier, but the food-per-dollar values is much reduced. Gimme a decent coupon and I'm all over the place!

Subway's good, but every time I've stopped at one in a small town, they've been busy with a relatively long wait. The one in Alva, OK on Sunday was packed at 3PM, and they had one person behind the counter.

I'm rarely on long-duration chase trips in recent years, mostly in 'marathon' mode to/from STL. In those cases I want something quick without having get out of the vehicle and/or wait in line. Fortunately my only McDonalds stops are during big chase days, so the exposure to their food is minimal. I will say that the chicken selects are uncharacteristic of typical McDonalds fare, actually pretty decent and safe on the digestive system. Can't say the same for anything else on their menu.

I find it interesting how many votes have been cast for Subway. I didn't care for Subway much until they started the everyday $5 footlong deals. I only eat one meal per day, so when I do eat I can wolf down a lot. For that reason I love buffets, and I always start out with a huge salad. Yum! Golden Corral is one of my favs, and I ate there in Rapid City a few days ago. I also love the Pizza Hut lunch buffets. I ate at the Big Texan recently! Did you know that one guy ate the entire 72 oz. steak dinner in under 9 minutes? OMG. Guess what? He was also a "Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest" winner.

Some days I'll resort to C-store sandwiches smothered in mayo, but not often, and usually that happens when I've been out chasing/struggling to find a motel... pretty late and I don't get around to eating until 10 or 11PM. Yesterday I had an omelette with the best... I'm serious about this... hashbrowns I've ever eaten in my life in Rugby ND.

Variety. That's important to me. Today I ate a Subway sandwich.

Breakfast buffet at the Big Texan, if I have the time. McD's is frequent mostly for the 20 piece nuggets and a large Diet Dr Pepper for $6. It's filling, cheap, and has the protein. Subway is pretty good too, but like most say the small town ones seem to always have a line. Other than that I don't mind a nice sit down restaurant if I'm in no hurry.

Agreed, Subway is the way too go. Heat, humidity and grease do not set the stage for a comfortable chase.

Although Subway will always lose to McDonalds with the 10 PM closing time after the typical late night chase in the middle of nowhere, in which case the 20 piece nugget is the only non-deadly option.
