Flaming Comments In (non-ST) Thread

That is some great video Chris, and I love it when I see it on TV....which looks tons better than on Youtube because of the compression.

Yeah...I had a few videos up on Youtube of some bad drivers. In one case I speed up a little to get more video proof of the driver since he was driving a government vehicle. Took a lot of criticism on that one, but as mentioned, I would just delete the over-the-top and foul languaged comments.

I've since removed them when I started posting weather videos since they were not really related. But one of them was of a total whack job driving in rush hour....funny as hell.

I was watching that very video a few weeks back -- great stuff.

I'd just disable comments if you don't wish to have them out there. I see lots of folks do that.

I saw this video a while back--very good shots of some wild action

Great video and intense experience. I would continue to keep it on YouTube for all to see. No matter how experienced of a chaser we all may be our emotions will always take over when caught in situations like you were in. It's human nature.

Chris...that's wild video. But I was wondering, since this happened right in front of you, did anybody check to see if the driver was OK or if he was trapped in need of recue...or a dry car to sit in? Just wondering as that would have been my 1st instinct.

I agree that the comments were either directed at the excitement in Chris' voice (who wouldn't be excited at a time like that) or the impression that nobody was helping the Truck Driver. It should be remembered that the camera only shows a small part of the picture, we really can't see who was pulled over doing what at the time.

Chris also clearly states in his comments on the YouTube page that after he called in the report he checked on the driver who was "okay".

Personally I think the comments feature is distracting on videos like this, probably best to either moderate them or remove them altogether unless you're really interested in soliciting feedback (or trash talk).

Good day all,

Now the ---- hit the fan with this post.

Another set of kids began attacking the post for the tornado vs truck thread again, and actually got WORSE after threatening to remove the video.

I disabled the comments and posted the reason for doing so on the last one. The video is still up, and you can see it below, but try not to read the comments, as they are highly offensive...

The last straw was from the "callmenow" poster. I actually had a correspondance with this person, who wound up being a British man around his 20's, and born to a very rich family. I take all this, ofcourse, with high doubt. Could be a 98 y/o woman as far as I care. That's not quite the point...

I removed a few other videos, particularly one for skydiving and flying with a dance song "Take me Higher" by Diana Ross. The aformentioned person reported this to copyright and the video was removed, and I am now getting personal emails from Motown for this.

This is not only sensless and un-necessary ... But now I can get into a heap of trouble thanks to some rich kid with nothing better else to do. I would really be careful on YouTube with this kind of stuff. I see a lot of people out there with music on their videos on YouTube, even from Iron Maiden, Greenday, and such.

If you're going to post your work/thoughts publicly (youtube, blogging, etc.) you gotta be ready for both positive and negative reactions. Nothing you do will ever please everybody, and more often than not you'll piss someone off for no reason, other than people are far too easily-offended in this coddled, PC generation we're living in. In the case of youtube, well, you gotta expect the kind of comments you're getting. That website is 90% dumbass, so severe that I can't even heckle with them...it just isn't fair.

Bottom line, you gotta have thick skin if you're gonna throw something up for public consumption, and as far as youtube in particular, you gotta get past that.

Youtube idiots.

Hey Chris.

First of all great video there. I really wouldn't worry about the moronic comments on Youtube, as others said "normal" people watching the video would very likely pay no attention to them. I had one comment on a video suggesting it would have been much more interesting if I'd leapt into the floodwaters [to my death.]

A much more indicative sign as to the quality and popularity of a video is the ratings and favourites. You have 4.5 stars and it's been favourited 90 times! Good job!! I look forward to watching more of your videos.

Good day all,

Great responses everyone! And that gives me a few tips and ideas I'll share with you...

I recommend always turning comments off on Youtube, especially with storm video, because of the audience. Not everyone on YouTube is a storm chaser, but the general public, especially the younger generation / pre-teen audience. This important as people can still rate your video, but you do not have to read any good or bad comments.

Second, the video content cannot have any music or video that is not yours. This is a no brainer. I know 99% of people post a video, for example of motorcross, with techno / rock music over it ... If someone catches this, you can have your video removed, and charges pressed for copyright infringement. That is more serious than some kid's spoiled comments.

I will make the following changes when I get around to it...

1). Make sure all comments are disabled.

2). Replace any music on "music videos" with either the original sound and / or royalty free music ... I found such at "musicbakery.com" to name one.

3). Try to shorten longer videos. Five minutes is enough. Ten minutes is YouTube's limit.

Thanks all for your input on this subject.

I have seen videos go past the 10 minute limit. One video in particular had a run time of over 40 minutes. How is this possible?

Limits Of File Sizes

Good day,

I have seen videos go past the 10 minute limit. One video in particular had a run time of over 40 minutes. How is this possible?

That is strange. I noticed the upload limit when uploading a WMV (which converts to FLV, YouTube's (among others such as AOL video) "native" flash-video format).

I have one video that was 10:40, so I am note sure if this limit is "around 10". The 40 minutes is probably either a small (highly compressed) file or someone who "knows" someone working at YouTube.

That's my guess.

Youtube

In the old days of Youtube there was no limit on the length of the video [as long as it was within a certain file size I think.] Those who registered accounts before Youtube changed hands to Google in 2005/2006 are still eligable to post videos longer than 10 minutes.

However those of us who registered after the handover are restricted to videos of 10 minutes and under. The attention span on Youtube is short so I think shorter videos under 5 minutes are definitely the way forward.

Despite all the crap which is posted on Youtube comments wise it is still a really good platform for displaying one's videos. I for one have had numerous footage sales originating from Youtube.
