The last two months have been one of the most active periods for tornadoes in some time. Last time it was this active for the total number of tors was April-May 2011. But nowhere near the intensity of 2011 in terms of strong/violent tors.
* April-May 2011 had 215 EF2+ and 6 EF5s
* April-May 2024 had 106 EF2+ and no EF5s
947 confirmed tornadoes (actual individual tors) so far this year (thru 6/4). Avg for the entire year is 1223 - 1990-2023 period.
April 2024 has had 327 tors confirmed so far, 2nd most for this month on record.
May 2024 has had 471 tors confirmed so far, 4th most for this month on record and 5th most in any month.
2024 is the 4th year to have 300 or more tors in two months in a calendar year. The other years are 1998, 2010, and 2011.
Keep in mind tor numbers for weak (EF0 and EF1) tors have gone up considerably since the early 1990s due to a host of social and technological factors. So one can't really use data prior to 1990 in comparing apples to apples for trends or records. As an example, from 1950-1989, only two years had more than 1000 tors. Since 1990, every year but 5 have had over 1000.
