Lack of NHEMI TCs 2025 So Far

There have been no TCs in the NHEMI so far in 2025, not even a TD.

Although this late w/ nothing yet in the Atlantic and the Eastern Pacific is not atypical, to have nothing in both the Western Pacific and Northern Indian Ocean to date (5/20) is atypical. This was the case last year as well w/ the latest first named/tropical storm on record for the Eastern Pacific, and the 5th latest on record in the Western Pacific.

We are now 4th latest w/ no named/tropical storms for the NHEMI (as of 5/20) behind 1973, 1983, and 2024 (since 1950). The record is 6/2 set in 1973 best I can tell looking at TC basin stats.

Where is the news in the mainstream media about this? Isn't this good news? Let me put it this way, if it there was record early high activity, it would be all over the news. The point is that we only hear certain cherry-picked stories that fit a particular narrative, and anything else is ignored. I'm not just talking about day-to-day news, but specifics when there is talk/debate about wx & climate. Not everything is always bad or worse. And we should include *all* relevant information in such talk/debates, not be selective to support one "side" or the other.

Yes, the Atlantic has been very active in recent years, but you can't focus on one tropical basin as representative of net global activity. One needs to look at the globe as a whole for the true picture, and 4 out of the last 5 years have seen below average tropical cyclone activity for the globe going by ACE (accumulated cyclone energy) which is best metric overall to use IMHO, but unfortunately, such does not make the news cut.

For reference, this is an excellent site that has a ton of TC stats both current and historical.
