  • After witnessing the continued decrease of involvement in the SpotterNetwork staff in serving SN members with troubleshooting issues recently, I have unilaterally decided to terminate the relationship between SpotterNetwork's support and Stormtrack. I have witnessed multiple users unable to receive support weeks after initiating help threads on the forum. I find this lack of response from SpotterNetwork officials disappointing and a failure to hold up their end of the agreement that was made years ago, before I took over management of this site. In my opinion, having Stormtrack users sit and wait for so long to receive help on SpotterNetwork issues on the Stormtrack forums reflects poorly not only on SpotterNetwork, but on Stormtrack and (by association) me as well. Since the issue has not been satisfactorily addressed, I no longer wish for the Stormtrack forum to be associated with SpotterNetwork.

I apologize to those who continue to have issues with the service and continue to see their issues left unaddressed. Please understand that the connection between ST and SN was put in place long before I had any say over it. But now that I am the "captain of this ship," it is within my right (nay, duty) to make adjustments as I see necessary. Ending this relationship is such an adjustment.

For those who continue to need help, I recommend navigating a web browswer to SpotterNetwork's About page, and seeking the individuals listed on that page for all further inquiries about SpotterNetwork.

From this moment forward, the SpotterNetwork sub-forum has been hidden/deleted and there will be no assurance that any SpotterNetwork issues brought up in any of Stormtrack's other sub-forums will be addressed. Do not rely on Stormtrack for help with SpotterNetwork issues.

    Sincerely, Jeff D.

Hard to choose an absolute favorite but these two are interesting.

The first was taken in the northwest suburbs of Sydney, Australia many years ago. It was a 30 second exposure, though all the lightning happened at once. 100 ISO film, 50mm lens. Must have been looking straight down the barrel of an anvil crawler - never seen anything like it in the years since.

This next one was taken out the front of my current home in Northeast NSW, Australia during December 2008. It was a fairly featureless high based thunderstorm but one of the most lightning active shows I've seen up close.

Zoom lens was at 28mm, F22, 2 seconds, ISO 200

I've strung together a whole stack of lightning photos into this clip. It includes some video towards the end of several close lightning bolts from the same storm as the photo above.

I captured my first lightning bolt last night during a storm in Chautauqua County, NY. I used my Kodal CD83 camera and got just plain lucky.

was right up on that hill this is one of maybe 10 in a row in like 2 minutes, this is the best though. it was a freak storm, caught me off guard and then boom cgs everywhere around me. I can still remember how loud the booooooooms sounded. you could see it, hear it, and then feel it, and really almost no delay.

I'm still a rookie to lightning photography (and DSLR photography in general), but I caught a pretty nice one while on my late May chase trip. I like to call this one the "wishbone bolt". I shot this on May 22nd, on the perimeter of the Joplin storm as the tornado was on the ground. That storm was really spitting out some lightning. The shot came out a bit blurred, I think from the very high inflow winds I was dealing with at the time.

I'm looking forward to the monsoon, starting up in just another week or two.
