verizon global ready 3g mobile hotspot

So if I go into a Verizon store I can get 5GB for $50??? Is that a no contract plan? I really don't want a 2 year contract because I'd only be using it 6 or 7 months a year.

Maybe. The plan has no contract but I've heard conflicting accounts on what the price is. I've heard the 5GB 3G datacard no contract plan is $80/mo, $60/mo, and $50/mo. The 4G datacard plan is supposed to be $50/mo, and was supposedly cheaper than the 3G plan because they want you to upgrade. Again, you'll have to go into the store and see what they have. Know what you want ahead of time. Ask for 5GB of no contract data and expect $50/$60 for it. I wouldn't take it otherwise. You can buy a mobile hotspot from ebay for fairly cheap ($50-$150 depending on features), and then just get a Millenicom plan which includes a free datacard, is cheaper, has a lot more data, and no contract. You can certainly use Millenicom without a mobile hotspot too, and if you do a no contract plan with Verizon you can also use your own equipment (ie buy a cheap datacard from ebay for $20-$30).

Bottom line, for the most bang for your buck:

Yeah a few weeks ago I bought a USB760 data card on ebay for $25. It was $128 at Wal-Mart. I'll probably buy a antenna for it as well. Guess I'll go into Verizon and see what they can offer. I'd definitely like to get 5GB for $50. I know online it says $80 but I will just have to talk to them. Since I'm a rookie I might just go with their 1GB plan if thats all I can get for $50 since I don't know how often I'll get out this year. Once I get more experience, I'll know exactly what I need equipment wise.

go to www.millenicom.com . Free Modem , No Taxes , No Contract , 20GB per month. End of story . To Go anywhere else is just plain dumb.

Here is a bit about what I did today. I went in and told the rep what I wanted and what I wanted it for. I picked up the global ready mobile hotspot with a 2 year contract but told him that I would break the contract around August or so, and he actually recommended I do that. So, instead of paying 270 for the device, I got a 50 dollar a month plan, and when I break the contract, I only have to pay 140 dollars and the device will be mine. Next year when I get ready to get the service going again, I have to pay the 35 reconnection fee and the month to month fee. Not bad at all.

glad that worked out for you. i got mine running and now my laptop just took a dump on itself. what i was told you can go to any price plan with no penalties and such. im using it as my secondary internet since my home one is no longer in use. but i think it will work real good for what im looking for. (unless my laptop is now dead)

So far so good on my part. The real test will be when I take it out on the first chase. I'm sure It'll do just fine. Hope you get your laptop running!

its an official no go... my hard drive just bit the bullet. i just replaced it not too long ago. like as in christmas. i just made all my chasing footage into a best of dvd thing for my friends and to work on editing. i dont know what else to do besides get a new laptop. i hope i can get my files recovered. the same thing crashed year at this time. today was a fubar day as it is. i may have to call verizon back and cancel my stuff. it was telling me it may be a software issue. i hope yours works better tehn mine.

didnt see any reviews on the software messing up anything but my registry got wiped out on the computer and now wont boot. :(

So are you saying that the Verizon software screwed your computer up? I played with the mobile hotspot today and had no problems. Installation was a breeze with no quirks.

EDIT: Are you sure you didn't have a virus on your system?

im sure it was a virus or something. i asked if they had software issues. being that im a verizon employee they are going to hold my service for 3 months no payments required or fees. that gives me time to get a new hardrive and or computer. i also heard the hard drive sound like a scratching noise. and it was telling me the realtek was unplugged and that my registry was missing or corrupt and that the error could be caused by unplugging a usb device that was in use. or a faulty hard drive or cd rom. well "target practice" is in order for my new paper weight :)

i tell ya one thing it was faster then my dsl connection at home. im impressed with it but mad at my computer.

technlogy sucks :P

Nice! Well, think of it this way. Just be glad that your computer screwed up now instead of in the middle of a chase or in the heart of chase season. This time of year is ok for stuff to go bad since you'll have plenty of time to get it taken care of.

exactly... i was hoping for a may chase. seems like the last 2 times in may that i went to kansas to chase the first weeks in may was greensburg and last yr were both tornado experiences.

thanks everyone for the input. happy hunting hopefully the systems hold up if your using this device. :)

Another thing to think about... I have a 2 year contract with Verizon. It's the 5GB for $50/month plan. Although I have a 2 year contract, I just suspend my account whenever I'm not using it. My bills average around $40/month during chase season, and if I need to fire up the computer last minute for a chase, you can do so on MyVerizon. For example, Sunday's chase cost me about $2 for internet. It totally made getting my device free completely worth it.

For those wondering about the 5gb cap...I have been using ATT for the past 4 years and here is what I found.

The most I have ever used in those 4 years during any month was 4.1gb and that was 4/16 - 5/15 of last year...during that time I chased actively and heavily [4-21, 4-22, 4-23, 4-24, 4-29, 4-30, 5-7, 5-10, 5-12.] I streamed entire 12hr drives from Chicago to Wichita or wherever I was going, downloaded and watched entire movies on youtube, checked facebook, email, all my favorite sites religiously even uploaded video via FTP to my broker. Basically I used the internet worry free because ATT offers unlimited usage [too bad there coverage blows and I too am switching this year.] and I still didn't hit the 5gb cap. After 4.1gb the next closest I came was 2.8gb.

It is very, very difficult to hit the 5gb cap in a month if all you are doing is chasing here and there. A couple things to keep in mind though. I only use my laptop when chasing/traveling so it sits without being used for several days at a time even during the season. Also, ATTs coverage being cruddy likely drops my data usage simply due to the fact I don't have data to begin with in more locations than with verizon/sprint. Still though, I am convinced its very hard to hit that cap unless you are a pretty sloppy internet user who goes download crazy with stuff you don't really need.

What do they charge you to reactivate your account?

It should be 35 bucks to reactivate the account. At least that's what I was told.
