verizon global ready 3g mobile hotspot

I don't know anything about this, but i was just chatting with a chaser friend of mine about possibly going with Verizon this year. Can you elaborate what this is with some photos or a website?

Nevermind...I just found what your talking about. Seems like a pretty nice option for mobile internet. I may have to check in to this.

the thing i like the most about it is that you can hook 5 wireless devices to it at once. it comes with all the international adapters and is already programmed on international networks to get internet. ive talked to a few techs here at verizon where i work and they say its a really good deal. im paying now $35 of 3 gigs a month. im thinking of testing it to a 5 gig for 50 a month. also you and change plans up or down with no penalties or extra fees. THAT IS COOL.

I think I've decided to go pick one up tomorrow. I'll eat the 270 bucks for it so I can go month to month. The 595U Sprint data card I've used the last 2 years has worked pretty good, but it has a contract. I'm sure Verizon will be just as good.

I'll pass. The huge number of reviews complaining about the battery life and having to contact Verizon for set-up/support isn't encouraging. I think Boggs is right, coverage should be just as good as Sprint, and if you are on a 5gig capped account, who cares if you switch.

is this the jason forum or what?

@ boggs yeah its a bit much. i got mine online and it was free with a 2 yr contract.

@ foster. im gonna look into that more. so far my issue is it doesnt wat to go wireless. i have to tether it to my laptop.

I've heard talk about cell tower overload (ie., data slowdowns) when numerous chasers converge on one area and utilize the same tower for radar downloads, streaming, etc. Wouldn't the same thing happen on a smaller scale with one of these hotspots if you had two or three chasers in one car all trying to pass data through the one hotspot connection? Just a thought.

5 gig for 50 a month. also you and change plans up or down with no penalties or extra fees. THAT IS COOL.

Or you could do $60/mo for 20GB/mo of Verizon data through the Millenicom reseller:
http://www.millenicom.com/page/plans#advanced_plan

The device is free with that promotion, and there is no contract or taxes.

I bought an MBR1000 ($90 used) cradlepoint that does the same thing, it creates a mobile hotspot out of the datacard connection. The MBR1000, however, will accept devices from other carriers as well. So I can also plug my ATT phone into it as a backup connection. It will automatically fall back to the other device if one loses signal. The laptop sees one wifi connection, and there is no hassle with connection software or reconnecting after being dropped.

You guys that have been doing this awhile help me out with my internet decision. I have 2 options. #1 do what Skip says and go with Millenicom and get 20Gb for $59.99 a month or go with Verizon prepaid and get 1GB for $50. Looking at the numbers I'd say I might as well go with Millenicom and get the extra data but how much data do you guys usually use a month? I plan on streaming some live video and using Gibson Ridge and F5data. Would 1Gb even last a day? I would only be able to chase 1-5 days a month.

You will not exhaust a gigabyte in a day. You might come close if you are chasing 5 days. I've tried the prepaid data through Verizon and ran out before the month was up, although I think I only had 500 MB to work with. The prepaid was a real pain in the ass for me too. It never worked right when I tried to do it myself through the website, so I always had to call tech support and have them set it up for me. If you are just chasing once, this might be the easiest/most convenient way to do it. If you are using it over multiple months, I might consider something that doesn't require reactivation/setup every month.

Really! I signed up today and got 5GB for 50 bucks a month.

Yeah, there are big differences between using the website and going into a store. You can't get the 5GB no contract plan through the website I don't think, but its also not prepaid (ie they will bill you for the next month instead of your service simply ending, unless you cancel the plan).

Here is a bit about what I did today. I went in and told the rep what I wanted and what I wanted it for. I picked up the global ready mobile hotspot with a 2 year contract but told him that I would break the contract around August or so, and he actually recommended I do that. So, instead of paying 270 for the device, I got a 50 dollar a month plan, and when I break the contract, I only have to pay 140 dollars and the device will be mine. Next year when I get ready to get the service going again, I have to pay the 35 reconnection fee and the month to month fee. Not bad at all.
