another one! the latest warning of typhoon 05W has it tracking northwest over hiroshima as it follows the steering ridge, then recurving towards the northeast towards Misawa as it moves towards a weakness in the ridge near 140E by 02/12Z. current winds are 75 kts with gusts to 90 kts and max strength forecast as of right now is 120 knots with gusts to 145 knots by 01/12Z. current storm motion is 330 degrees at 06 knots. it is expected to make extra tropical transition by tau 120.

update on Typhoon 05W(Usagi)

latest warning shows the storm currently boasting winds of
120 knots with gusts to 145 knots. it is expected to make super typhoon strength by 01/12Z. a weakness in the ridge caused by an approaching short wave trough may cause the storm to recurve early making landfall further east than expected. the storm is expected to make landfall on or near Kyushu at time 02/12Z. current storm motion is 320 degrees at 12 knots.

This is now a Cat 4 Typhoon. Usagi looks inpressive on satalite images.

Now we have Tropical Storm Chantal off the east coast and I think 1-2 invests. Things are heating up.

Looks like Usagi made landfall in northeastern Kyushu. Lowest pressure I could find was 968 mb at Nyutabaru AFB about 25 miles south of the center. The stongest winds at this station were 010@35G72 kts. Another station located in the straits between Kyushu and Shikoku islands had sustained at 60 kts from the SSE but the station is at 134 meters. In any case it looks like MSLP was around 962 mb and winds perhaps only about 75-80 kts.

Still first time in a while that an intense Typhoon made it to the main Japanese islands. The serious acceleration/squeeze play made Usagi look very similar in IR appearance to Hugo with an elongation to NW-SE of the main CDO/eye and restricted outflow bands NE and SW of it.

Hah, I was thinking the same thing! However unlike Hugo the upstream terrain had a significant impact on the circulation.
