It has come to my attention that an intense cyclone is expected to hit parts of France and Spain. At Meteoalarm.eu, these two countries are marked at highest vigilance level.

In some parts of Spain, winds up to 150 km/h(93 mph) have been forecasted. Nevertheless looks like situation about to unfold in France and Spain is certainly something to look at.

I have access to some French and Spanish channels over satellite so I can monitor local media reports as well.

Cyclones have been quite active in the Atlantic coastal areas during past few days, I must note.

Update: Unfortunately there has already been a fatality because of this storm. I am reading the TVE's(Spanish TV) teletext and it is reporting a death of a 52 years old woman. Fifteen autonomous communities are on storm alert. Especially bad situation is at Basque area where the afore mentioned 150 km/h wind gusts are expected along with waves to 14 meters. I understand from the news that in some areas schools have been suspended and some areas are under hurricane wind alert. In some areas, avalanches are expected and marine traffic has been affected as well.

BFM TV from France reporting red alert in effect in 5 French departments.
Update at 19:05 GMT on Friday. BFM TV reporting that winds to 150 km/h are also possible in Southwestern France, and they are comparing this cyclone with storm Lothar back in 1999.

Red alert now in Italy too, where high waves and winds to 10 Bft are foreasted. The cyclone in question has now made landfall in France. TVE is now reporting two fatalities. In Galicia, winds have reached 150 km, as expected. In Basque and Cantabria areas, winds were less than forecasted.
From BFM TV: 9 departments now under red alert... Channel showing now "Info Alert" ticker instead of usual news tucker. 700 000 households without power in Gironde and elsewhere. Videos from the storm shown on the channel reminds me the hurricane coverages that I have seen in the past.
From TV5 Monde: Parts of France have been hit with winds up to 175 km/h(108 mph). There has been storm damage.
Update on storm damage at 13:42 UTC on Saturday: A roof of a sports center has caved in in Barcelona, Spain. 3 Children have been killed.

There was a 50.6 m/s (113 mph) gust reported in northwest Spain. http://www.essl.org/ESWD/
Very impressive system on that satellite image that Oliver posted above.
And 53.1 m/s (118 mph) in Portvendres, France! France 24 news are saying that they haven't had a such storm for a decade(I guess Lothar in 1999 was the last time).

look at the wind direction for the 169 km/h gust recorded in Biscarosse, France. It is blowing from east to west, the opposite direction of all surrounding winds !

that was a 06:00Z reading . It was the last reading from the Biscarosse weather station. look here :

winddirection was 250 ( west ) for four hours but at last moment it was 100 ( east) and then nothing, no more wind measuring. Gone with the wind...

on french TF1 TV news one witness says there were rotating winds ( " ... des vents tourbillants... "

look here :

http://videos.tf1.fr/video/news/0,,4236368,00-tempete-hivernale-la-situation-dans-les-landes-.html

start the video. there's a short commercial first, then the news starts. listen to the man speaking at timeframe 01:09 he says " des vents tourbillonnants" and does a rotating move with his hand. This was in Mimizan, just a few miles south of Biscarosse.

well even if there were no imbeded tornadoes, straightline winds of over 100 miles per hour are pretty bad...
