Spotter Network and Delorme

Nuts...

Well, then its a matter of continuing to troubleshoot, or get another puck. I just replaced my old Garmin unit a couple weeks ago with a Globalsat BU-353. Works flawlessly, and picked it up brand new and delivered for $24. Just a second option for you.

Out of interest as a backup option, is the GlobalSat BU-353 available at retail outlets in the United States?

It's not so bad, you can get a Pharos puck for like $20 now. I'm sure you can get $20 for that thing on Ebay and break even.. Way back I bought the Earthmate because it was the cheapest USB one out there at like $99, and others were in the $150-200 range.. :D You could get actual serial port ones cheaper, but that was about the time they started removing serial ports from laptops, and there were no USB to serial converters yet!

BU 353s run ~ $40 with Buy Now options on eBay. I say, rather than spinning wheels, and you have GPSgate...get a BU353 (or the Pharos). I found it was silly trying to fix issues when 70% of chasers have dealt with these issues and the most simple answer was GPSgate + BU-353. The time saved could be used for profit making and other more valuable issues. But this is just an opinion of mine.

Now to test out DeLorme SA 2011 (just upgraded).

Peter, try the search globalsat bu-353 retail "New Zealand". The first result links to a site that appears to id several NZ sources, including Tech OnLine and Notebook City, which appears to offer free NZ shipping. Prices are around 100 NZ dollars.

I have never seen anything but the DeLorme and Microsoft branded Pharos units in stores. And then I've never seen them sold separately, only bundled with Street Atlas and Streets and Trips respectively. If you need a GS unit forwarded to you I'd be happy to help.

i've got the Micrsoft USB GPS Puck that came with Microsoft Streets and Maps 2008, and GPSGate downloaded, but I can't for some reason seem to get Spotter Network to recognize my puck, and I can't seem to get the GPS Gate to recognize my puck while GRLEVEL3 is using the puck. It's on COM8, but it won't allow me to use both at the same time. any ideas?

Look and see what virtual ports GPSGate is outputting the signal too, then set the rest of your programs to use one of those ports. One port per program.

GPSGate has to talk to the puck directly. Then IT creates virtual COM ports (which mirror the output of COM8) that you will connect GR3 and SN Client to. If GR3 is already tying up the puck, GPSGate can't connect to it (COM ports can only serve one program at a time, remember? That's why we need GPSGate.. :D).

So you have to run GPSGate and point its input to COM8. Then on its output tab create two Virtual COM ports. Usually there are a couple low numbers available, like COM1 or COM3, then everything above COM 9.. GR3 needs one of the low numbers, it won't recognize above COM8 I think. SN will read any number. So once the Virtual ports are set up in GPSGate, you point your programs to them, NOT the puck on COM8.

When I was using the trial version I had trouble getting mine to work also. I had to make sure there was nothing else plugged into any of my USB ports, then plug in the GPS after booting, then open GPS gate, run the setup wizard to find my receiver. Once all that was done, I could then plug in my broadband modem, open GRlevel3 / start polling, and SN Client. However I did not realize that you only had two virtual com ports available on the trial version so when I would try and open up Streets and Trips it would crash everything. I upgraded to the regular version of GPS gate and have not had a problem since. However, now that it is all set up I still have to plug everything in a certain order and make sure it's plugged into the same USB port everytime or it doesn't work.
