Report: Feb. 9-10, 2010 VA/DC/MD SNOWMEGADDON!!!

Jason Foster

I'm sure other may add to this thread as the system moves northeast further into New England, but I limited it to these states to start.

More to come, but had to get something going for this EPIC storm. I'm so exhausted after having such an eventful week, and still have days of digging out and some more photography and video to grab.

This was the second round in nearly back-to-back HECSs (Historic East Coast Storms), with record snow fall in an already record breaking year.

This storm I spent more time closer to home because the likelihood of true blizzard conditions had me a little more worried about what kind of situation I would encounter. However, I know wish I had ventured further, and returned to downtown Washington, DC. Instead I stayed most of the time in Montgomery County, MD which is just north of DC. I did take a drive up to Frederick, Maryland (Frederick County) where the blizzard conditions were a noticeable amount worse. True white out conditions were experienced. There was already approx. 18 inches or more of snow on the ground, and quickly we had received 5 or 6 more inches overnight. Most of the highways were plowed of the deep snow, but a good packed cover made driving slow and heavily rutted. Interestingly it seemed the high winds were actually helping keep the roads from getting piled up with snow, which helped with my low clearance chase ride.

I had the stream rolling nearly the entire time, but at times I think the visuals were lacking (as too my photographic opportunities) because with white out conditions there simply was no context to photograph. I haven't reviewed my pictures yet, but I suspect a great many of them are "pointless" shots of super low contrast conditions. I will post the pictures later.

This storm has put us over the season record (I believe). Below I have listed "IMBY" snow totals for the season so far. The closest we've been to these kind of numbers was way back in 2003. Not likely to see it again soon either, although we aren't done with winter yet either. The DC region has decent chances of snow through mid-March.

-------------------------------
2009 IMBY Snow totals:
Mar. 1 = 5" (per NWS spotter reports and graphics)
Dec. 5 = 6"
Dec. 19 = 20"
Dec. 31 = 2"
2010 IMBY Snow totals:
Jan. 08 = 2" (per NWS)
Jan. 30 = 5"
Feb. 02 = 5"
Feb.5/6 = 30" (per NWS reports)
Feb.9/10= 15" (preliminary)
.....waiting for more!!!!Bring on the snow!
Feb. 15 (the next suspicious date)

2010 YTD TOTAL: 57"
SEASONAL TOTAL: 85"
Yearly average: 27 inches
Chances of this kind of snow fall: ~ once every 100 years.

IMBY = In My Back Yard.

BTW:

I know it's not common to repost NWS stuff, but this is just too cool:

That's about 28" on my deck in Montgomery Village, MD. Photo taken 10 February at 9:00pm. This was about the maximum SNOG that I got.

Nice shot(s). Epic snowfall! I take it there are sidewalks behind those snow piles (in that first photo)?

I think your next round of snow is due to roll through here tomorrow afternoon and evening.
