Well the mid-summer classic heat wave is on in the Plains. According to the record, it hit 106 yesterday (7/17) in Central SD with 102 here in the DFW area, which is the hottest temp to date for the year so far. A quick glance at this weeks models shows only a slight amount of relief (upper 90s vs 100s) depending on your exact locale as the summertime "death ridge" is progged to shift EWRD across the C Plains to the Midwest.

I drove up from Houston to DFW yesterday and I could feel a noticeable temp spike somewhere around Conroe where the temp went from 93 to 97 in about 5 miles. Now I got a nice 1st degree burn on my upper left arm and back neck to show for it. Ill remember to put on some SPF next time I go for long cross-country drives in the summer as I enjoy riding with windows down.

I am curious to hear how everyone in the Plains is coping with this heat and how its affected your day-to-day plans.

Gotta love when temps in NH, SD, W.Mont., etc. are at the same point as Miami, FL:eek:

The heat advisories are taking over, it seems as if the subtropical ridge has obtained super powers. And with the tremendous large scale subsidence, we shall all be cooked by tomorrow afternoon under such oppressive heat and humidity. QUICK, WE MUST DO SOMETHING, IT WILL COVER THE ENTIRE ERN HALF BY THE OVERNIGHT PACKAGE. I recommend everyone hoping on a plane immediately to China...wait, its summer there too? DAMN.

Pretty hot tho temps in the lower 90's aren't that insane for the US east coast this time of year.

Nick...didn't realize until I just finally paid attention to you signature that "NE" in your profile data on the left is for "New England" not Nebraska...LOL.

Yeah...been loving the heat overall. Sucks for Census work though...I have to change my shirt every couple of hours. Luckily don't have too many hours these days.

On a more serious note this summer has been odd in michigan. More warm the usual, and way more tornadoes then usual.

Gotta love Seattle !!! :D
Sunny skies, temps in the 70s......... ahhhhhhhh::p

LOL...I remember hearing about a few years back that after a really nice summer in Seattle, where there was a lot of sun and such, then it went back to the status quo yuck...that the suicide rate sky rocked and many more in therapy said they were depressed because with the nice weather, they finally realized how nice it really could be. I'm sure a google search will find the article/tv story. It would have been on one of the national networks (like cnn).

RECORD TEMPS

New numbers in late this evening from the 18z MAV suggest high temps tomorrow across DFW may approach record criteria. Officially going for a high of 104 but if MAV verifies, records will be set (106-1998)

Also Memphis stands a good chance of breaking its 114 yr old record high of 101 back in 1896.

Here is the US forecasted highs for tomorrow from TWC.

Well, it's been quite comfortable in Sacramento, CA due to low pressure hanging out perpetually off the coast. Very nice. Can't say the same for Russia lately with record heat and fires. Remember that vodka and 102 F can lead to risky behavior near water:

---
The Russian capital Moscow has suffered its hottest day on record, with temperatures reaching 39C (102F).

A month-long record-breaking heatwave has sparked nearly 50 fires in the Moscow region and the capital is sweltering under a thick layer of smog.

Health experts say pollution levels in parts of the city are 10 times higher than normal safety limits and advise locals to stay indoors or wear masks.

A state of emergency has been declared in more than 20 drought-hit regions.

It is estimated a fifth of the country's wheat crop has now died due to the lack of rain in what is thought to be the country's worst drought for more than a century.

Scores have died in the heatwave, some drowning having taken a swim after drinking too much vodka.
Fully-clothed bathers

Emergency aircraft have already dropped several hundred tonnes of water to extinguish the blazes.

Moscow is the one site for which I have seen hard data as relates to records for summer heat. In an earlier post, I commented on this, as the 130-year-old weather data book for Moscow was rewritten last week of the month.

The new all-time highest temperature for any day, month or year was set on the 26th, when a reading of 37.5 C, or 99.5 F, was registered.

Then, on the 28th, the exact reading was tied only two days later.

This was all a set up for the finale of a flaming hot stretch that saw nine days in 13 have a daily mean temperature at least 10 C above normal.

On the 29th, the temperature "officially" soared to 38.2 C, or 100.8 F, on a day which mean temperature was as full 14 C above normal.

ST. PETERSBURG SWELTERS

Even hotter, with respect to normal, than Moscow's 8.3 C above normal was St. Petersburg, where the whole month of July was an average of 9.0 C above normal.

and NOAA declared this last 10 years the hottest decade on record BTW:

The 2009 State of the Climate report released today draws on data for 10 key climate indicators that all point to the same finding: the scientific evidence that our world is warming is unmistakable. More than 300 scientists from 160 research groups in 48 countries contributed to the report, which confirms that the past decade was the warmest on record and that the Earth has been growing warmer over the last 50 years.

But ya wouldn't know it for the nice 86-90 temps in Sacramento, CA. Even hit a record low of 50 this last week. Nippy.
