Chase Case #13

Am on my way to nail that cell popping off to my east near Hutchinson it looks like. I turn up the song "Highway to Hell" and take off on a vapor trail down towards this developing storm.

Better decide quick, roughly an hour to get in front of the storm from St. Cloud with just over an hour of daylight left! ;)
Haha, I took the bait and currently zipping on the interstate to reach the Twin Cities by 0Z which probably means only one thing: there's going to be a huge supercell develop near St. Cloud while I'm stuck in a traffic jam on I-94. Never fails, it seems like whenever I choose the southern target, something incredible develops to the north where I was originally at. Perhaps I won't jinx the chase this time. ;o)

Wayfaring Map

Just off the subject real quick before the next update. Currently in Ozark Mo. 25 F with heavy frz rain/sleet. 1/2" of ice on trees and powerlines.

I am currently between Grand Forks, and Fargo ND in the town of Hillsboro ND. I have cells exploding to my west, and that will be my play. Winds have switched from calm to backing nicely in advance of this dominant cell to my due west. This will be the money maker. Should be a LP with a rope within the hour. I am hanging at a rest stop going over radar returns, and may head over to the Pizza Ranch for a bit. I will have to wait for these cells to mature, and head to me. I think they will be nice and mature by the next update. I hope to see some great structure, and maybe a rope. . .

Heading toward Young America where Dean is and will follow the storm into the Metro and hopefully be able to keep up with it as traffic winds down for the evening!

storms are backbuilding, hopefully the southern most cell is far enough south where we wont have to deal with the metro. I'm a little worried about the storms lining out too quickly with as fast as they have built south....

0z: Nice cell development sse of my location in Lakota, ND. I'll move se toward Northwood, ND for an intercept. I can't easily judge the storm motion, but my best guess is nne. If I'm off, I'll adjust a little west or east. The drive is just over an hour, so hopefully the cell continues to develop and make use of the nice juice in the area. I'm happy about the sfc wind's backing at Fargo now. That should help fuel my cell cluster and increase shear.

Currently on the NW side of the metro and I'm really going to need to stay east of this storm. The last thing I want to deal with is being stuck in a huge hail core in a city that I'm not at all familiar with. Depending on exactly where the cell is, I'm going to zig-zag down the metro and hopefully intercept the storm near Eden Prairie, MN which is about 20 minutes away.

My only concern attm with these ND cells is the ccw turning vertical wind profile from 850mb to 300mb. I'd prefer the 850mb winds be a little more sw oriented and the 700mb at least wsw, but I'll take whatever she delivers. At least sfc winds are backed.

Yeah, I like the play in Northwood myself. I will play the south side, and hang a left on hwy 200 and head east until I get to the hwy 18 junction. This will give me the option to head north if need be. This way it will be a bit more agressive. Then if need be, I can head north through Northwood, and jump back on a east bound route and head back towards Grand Forks and flank the cell.

BTW, these cells could be riding an existing boundary with there odd orientation on radar, I wouldnt be surprised.

Based on the IR sat image, I might have to intercept a little further north. If there is a 0030z update, I'll re-evaluate.
