4/21/07 NOW: TX/OK/KS/CO/NE/SD

Just listened to David Drummond's TV report from Tulia. He estimates damage as EF3 on at least one structure. There are apparently significant travel problems in Tulia as to be expected and lights are out.

East of Groom now, while driving through something cut the power poles and have seen a very dark lowering south of Groom. Trying to stay out of it way whil trying to get some visuals.

Witnessed several tornadoes starting near Four Way and moving northest from there. At one point the developing tornado was VERY close to 287 and had tons of scud rotating around the developing tornado, then the entire circulation filled with condensation. Then caught two more from the cell that moved east of Dumas that I am sure many others saw. Spectacular structure!!! Several power flashes and at one point the lights of Sunray lit the stove pipe up well. Then another tornado formed and became a nice cone well northeast of Sunray. Heading home via a LONG detour as police said Cactus took a major hit and they aren't letting anyone on 287 northbound.

At the request of David Drummond........
I am relaying this message / request for information.

Just got through talking to David Drummond who states that according to the city police department in Tulia, Texas, a storm chaser's vehicle has been severely damaged by a tractor trailer truck after the truck fell on top of the SUV as a result of being hit by the tornado. The police are seeking information on the whereabouts and identity of the drivers of the vehicle(s). David says that it is a late model Nissin Xterra SUV, white in color with a Texas license plate. If anyone here on Stormtrack knows who this might/could be, would you please post here or contact Drummond directly. Thank you for your time.

David just called back........

At 0518 UTC, 4/22/07---
The Police Department in Tulia has accounted for the vehicle and injured chasers. David and Graham Butler say that the chaser's SUV is severely damaged and likely totaled. Injuries are reported to be minor, thankfully.
Check back later for a full report from David and Graham in the Stormtrack.Org Reports section.

Tom, that is terrific news! This story has been circulating in the chat room tonight and everyone was holding their breath, hoping the occupants were ok. Thank you for confirming that they are.

Just a quick post while I have a lull in activity here, as you can imagine things were very chaotic. I don't have time for a full chase report now so I will just update the situation in Tulia as we know it at this time.

Damage path right now is estimated about 2 blocks wide and 15 blocks long. The worst damage is to business structures along the main road through town. Graham got a tour with the sheriff and we may definitely looking at EF4 (I am not completely familar with the new scale). Cinder block and brick buildings were leveled. North of that it went through residential areas that are still being searched as I type this. We are sitting across the street from the staging area for the emergency vehicles at this time.

No fatalities known at this time. 3 confirmed injured/treated and released.

The damage totals will no doubt top well over a million, probably just at the Ford Dealership alone.

It's very surreal here right now....
