4/21/05 TALK: KS/MO

I am currently sitting in the parking lot at the Sac & Fox Casino along US Highway 75 near Fairview. Stacks of mammatus right above me, and extremely dark to my southwest.

FWIW, Ben. My eyeballs tell me the storm's cutting you off to the south, and you might want to head east to Hiawatha and south toward Horton. A tail-end situation with the tail now about at Ontario.

“Take some stills Carson, take some stillsâ€￾ Sorry couldn’t help myself.

From Fairview you should drop south towards Netawaka, and flank this baby, or your going to get rolled.

Come on you guys, Ben is a student, he needs to LEARN. Ha ha - yeah, though the same thing when I saw his post - but I already gave the cell positioning track earlier - and it went unnoticed I guess. Oh well. Saw a new tornado warning was issued for a left split cell - supposedly an observed funnel cloud. There is at least some rotation with the cell on radar. southern cell continues to chew up some smaller storms on the southern flank - but should get a break soon allowing the circulation to firm back up.

The Johnson County (NE) storm looks surprisingly healthy for a left mover. I wasn't expecting a TOR.

It almost seems as if it's splitting, however. Weird...I've never seen a left mover split again like that. I'm having a hard time visualizing the mechanics. Perhaps it's just a new updraft.

Well, the rotation on that cell is tightening up - bt it would probably cost you a windshield to go in ans see what it is doing right now. What a mess. New tornado warning.

Glen

Storm splits galore!

The NE KS storm is the only one that impresses me from a storm chasing point of view, and it's headed for bad terrain. The storms in SE NE just look like hailers. The whole mess will be on top of me soon enough, so I think I'm just going to hang here at home, keep the car in the garage, and hope for big hail. Perhaps I can shoot some structure from behind after things pass.

Is anyone else having trouble with Weathertap's radar loops? The static images are refreshing, but the loops aren't.

The storms in SE Nebraska are interesting. For one thing, they're maintaining their discrete nature. For another, they're split-happy; I've counted two splits so far. I'm curious if I'm watching a large numbers of supercells being born.

Visual observation from my backyard in Lawrence shows towering cumulus attempting to break the cap west and south of the city. Wind has picked up strongly from the SSE.

Its starting to look like the supercell in NE Kansas is our "Tail End Charlie". It has been moving E-NE from Mahattan KS towards St. Joe MO. This storm has been moving along and gobbling up little storm cells as they comes up.

Still waiting for the storms to arrive here in Lincoln NE. Looks not to well organized. Could get some hail and heavy rains from these storms. Will be out taking pictures. Hey I'm storm chasing after all! And I got my cochlear implant surgery last week...

Anybody on the NE / KS storms should start thinking about a river crossing.

Options from North to South are:

Nebraska City
Brownville
Rulo
St. Joseph

If you cross at Brownville or St. Joseph, you enter the unchaseable hills of
NW MO.

EDIT: Although if you cross at Brownville you could take I-29 north and catch the southern flank of the Johnson County storm in sw IA, if it holds together
