Von Castor and myself are at the University of Texas Medical center in Galveston. We are getting gust up to 105 mph. We have found a nice parking garage here and we feel safe. Going to try to go up to the sea wall when the eye comes over to report any damage and then beat it back here before round #2.

We have a complete team in the field of associate chasers and severe streamers, including Roger Hill, David Drummond, the Miller Guys, Brett Adair, Matt Grantham, and Stu Robinson.

Our guys have been at the sea wall all day and most are staying on the island tonight. A lot of flooding occuring, as witnessed by Drummond and Hill.

Under the circumstances, it looks like the best track that Galveston/Houston could hope for (at literally the 11th hour). Based on where Ike is coming ashore, it looks like Galveston is no longer on the dirty side and the biggest surge (from here on out) will be north of there. SW Louisiana gets screwed again. If Ike continues to intensify over the next several hours (as the NHC forecast discussion alludes to) there may be more damage to high rise buildings in Houston than was first anticipated.

Clear slot over us now. We just went to the roof and experienced rain free IKE.

Radar shows the eye circulation well and the echo tops loop shows it forming the inner wall..but the L2 Base refl. loop has the 'oddest' shape eye I've ever seen..it looks almost like a Swastika at times ..

Fox News has Geraldo Rivera live from Galveston. Not raining at his live spot, but still quite windy with waves coming over the sea wall. Radar showing a dry area north of the eye.

Fox News previously reported winds 200’ AGL at over 150 mph and now at 130-140 mph. Geraldo is knee deep in water on the sea wall and got pelted in the head by debris, just reported a gust of 127 mph. Water level at the sea wall was said to be expected to rise by at least another 6’. A second interior eye wall developing.

Geraldo on Fox just mentioned a 127 mph gust! Is this possible? LOL! He's still standing out in it and in the surf. I have to give him credit for good entertaining coverage.

Appears Ike has really pulled together during the past couple of hours and is developing more of an annular structure. I am a lot more concerned about Galveston and the bay area than I was earlier. This is going to be bad.

It is unlikely that that guy was standing out there in a 127mph gust measuring it on his handheld sensor. That did not look like 120+ right behind them. It also seemed too quiet. Perhaps they have another sensor more exposed... perhaps heraldo told his guy to exagerate.

EDIT: however it is clear that their is minor(at this point) overtopping of the seawall in galveston.... and it will get worse. Most tide gauges that are still working are around 10 feet of storm tide and increasing rapidly. Remember tide gauges are not at the high water marks and do not represent the highest surge. That Crystal Beach/Bolivar peninsula area just north of GLS looks like its going to be completely wiped out.
