09L: Hurricane Ike

Geraldo on Fox just mentioned a 127 mph gust! Is this possible? LOL! He's still standing out in it and in the surf. I have to give him credit for good entertaining coverage.

Well, if one good thing comes from this catastrophe, it will be watching Geraldo get repeatedly pummeled by the forces of nature. He's not in much danger though; I'm pretty sure his moustache doubles as a flotation device.

I think a 127 gust would have picked him up and thrown him a small distance. You can't stand up in a 127mph wind!

Michael - Fox news was simply repeating NHC's dropsonde stuff (TCDAT4 product.) There's no way he stood in 130mph winds.

He also mentioned that he was standing in 100 mph sustained winds. I don't think it's physically possible to stand in winds that strong.

Flotation device? With wind like that, wouldn't his moustache serve as a facial aileron? :D

I heard a report that several people were stranded on a bridge in Galveston. Has anyone heard of this? Supposedly two choppers have been sent from San Antonio for rescue purposes.

Did anybody hear what happened to those people? I heard about them too, but never heard about them being rescued. I assume they were rescued, but wanted to make sure.

The Weather Channel said local news stations in Texas were broadcasting that people who did not evacuate should write their name and social security numbers on their arm. That's kinda creepy, but I guess it's something to consider if you decided to stay. And I think way too many people decided to stay.

Good luck to all fellow chasers out there in Ike's path. May God's hand protect you.

It's possible. I did it with Hurricane Lili in 2002. I have video of a colleague and myself taking turns holding a hand-held anemometer measuring between 101-109.

Power Flashes - Sustained Winds

We are talking to Matt Grantham live on the SevereStudios Storm Center feed right now. He has power flashes in Beaumont, TX and 40-50 mile an hour sustained winds. Gusts to 70 MPH he is reporting.

We are on the eastern side of Galveston at the University of Texas Medical Center. It is right across the street from where the fire at the boat dock was at earlier. Rain has once again started back up BUT NOT NEARLY as heavy as it was before the clear slot hit. Winds are gusting to 100 mph
