09L: Hurricane Ike

KHOU is reporting unconfirmed reports that people are trapped on their roofs at Crystal Beach. 18 people in total; 3 trapped atop Seaside Lumber, and 15 trapped in the church across the street. Reports are that the 15 trapped at the church have tied themselves together.

Shouldn't be a problem. They still have 4 hours left of the 13 hours the TV guy said this noon that they'd have to evacuate (if they want to).

At 630pm this evening, Neil Frank (not sure if you've heard of him, pretty famous hurricane guy) told people that if they haven't evacuated yet, but were on the dry side of things, you still had time to get out.

Can't believe the people they put on the news sometimes! They say the darndest things...

For the past three hours the authorities have been telling people to shelter in place. For the past hour and a half, anyone in a car trying to evacuate Galveston is to be ARRESTED, as there is a curfew in place. Good thing there are still a couple hours left to get out, as per the media, right? :)

We are actually being put up by some very nice folks in an almost brand new high rise, high dollar condominium. We were able to park the vehicle in a nearly enclosed parking garage 5 floors up and we are in a huge 6th floor lobby. This is a relatively new building build to withstand a CAT5 we are told
.

Stay safe, Dave! Been watching your cam stream on and off all day -- amazing, to say the least. I get the feeling you're sitting at a pretty epic place at an epic time, though I hope I'm wrong.

Which network is giving the best overview of what's going on in Galveston at this hour (live units, etc)?

Fox News is doing an excellent job in the last 15 minutes or so I've been watching. TWC is so-so and CNN was showing a Sara Palin interview as of 15 minutes ago. So probably at this point you should pick either TWC or FNC....

EDIT: Seems Anderson Cooper is now on CNN and now covering the storm...so it's a pick 'em at this point between CNN and FNC....

I've been watching this stream of all the local stations who are doing live updates including from Galveston. One of the anchors is saying, "this storm will be remembered for the storm surge."

One station reported that part of a wall or brick veneer collapsed on the Holiday Inn. This is near where many chasers are staying.

Reed is streaming from the seawall right now. I am trying to reach him to see what kind of wind speeds he is picking up -- there is a LOT of water spilling over the top.

I have been watching Fox news which is doing a great job overall and TWC's Jim Cantore is of course doing a great job of giving accurate info.

Do you have a link for Reed's stream? Not much discussion about what Ike is actually doing right now here - any updates from the more knowledgeable here?

Fox is doing the best right now..got love the the guy in the background measuring the wind..this is classic, just reported 120mph gust with his hand held anamometer
