09L: Hurricane Ike

Nice report Heidi ! Yeah I saw Geraldo..looked like he was sitting in palm Tree lol...The eye is entering Galveston now..

I fear that Crystal Beach and the Bolivar peninsula are toast... I looked at USGS maps and high ground there is about 11 ft MSL, with 5-6 ft the average for most houses. They're getting the brunt of the eyewall and storm surge. The media said earlier that people were awaiting rescue there, but now all the focus is on Galveston. The outlook is bleak I'm sure and I suppose the whole peninsula is a black box. Sad.

Why all the low wind reports? With a 110mph cane shouldn't we have seen plus 70mph winds long ago? The eye is now practically on shore.

Wonder when we'll see the video downloadable of Mike Bettes getting blown over during his MSNBC interview. Wonder what the gust was. Didn't see it but it was mentioned at TWC and MSNBC after the fact. So now, regarding Geraldo, people will think they can stand in 130 mph winds. Next, they'll be standing in front of tornadoes as they overtake them and post that on youtube. Josh Dow-guy just got interviewed on MSNBC also.

For what it's worth, I just saw a shear marker north of Orange showing 124 knts.

Those markers are just beyond the edge of the first pulse that's used to retrieve radial velocity (at this VCP, there are at least two scans as each of the low-level elevation angles). Note how the quality of the radial velocity data decrease rapidly and abruptly >90 mi away from the radar. All of this is to say that you really shouldn't trust the shear markers beyond 90 miles in this situation. Perhaps Jim can explain it a bit better (since he's more familiar with the VCPs) and the 88D scanning strategies.

Radar loop over the last 3 hours shows that the eye appears to continue to collapse and shrink as it approaches landfall.

It appears to collapse on Base Refl. tilt 1.. Go to tilt 2 a higher elevation or Echo tops and its still intact..
Remember winds even a 1/4 mile up or few hundred feet off the ground can make a difference.

Ah...thank you. Old habits of looking at the lowest degree of tilt are not broken so easily. Looking at the higher tilt, the eye looks very consistent. Thanks for setting me straight.

Stu - stay safe! Looks like the NW eyewall is almost on your position - perhaps another 20 min...

Roger Hill phone report on SS Storm Center Live feed right now. Roger reporting strong winds and heavy rain. Live feed up too...

Riding the storm out on the 5th floor of a 10 story loft building downtown. Power flashes are numerous and make a very loud boom when they do go. Downtown still has power, but can see darkness beyond city limits. 800,000 people without power now throughout the area.
