IMO you want to see posted photos or post photos yourself, join a photography forum. Why clutter the forum with more stuff not chase related?

Guess we ought to start deleting all the non-chase related threads then, like football, deer hunting, etc etc. As well as the photography ones already on here.

If we can and do post various non-weather photo stuff already on here, and we also have a forum for anything and everything(bar and grill)...I'm missing how a section for photography is going to ruin anything.

It seems really simple to me. Just look at the equipment section, it's about 50% photography stuff. All one would really be doing is splitting that up so photography stuff goes into one area and equipment stuff in its own. I don't think a whole lot would change, just be laid out better.

That and having a section for just photography where people can just post whatever they want, might be of use during the down period. But yeah, we can all just go to some other photography site to do it too. If that ends up the choice, oh well. Won't surprise me. Seems this has been tried in the past and shot down for whatever reason. Stormchasers.org did theirs with a photography section. Could just go there.

Actually, I thought it over and I agree that a photography section wouldn't be any different than the other sections. It is chase related, so disregard my previous post.

If some of the photo threads in the equipment forum are any indicator, a lot of the users here are fantastic photographers. I like seeing their work here because its a smaller forum and most people here share some common interests. On a bustling photography forum it would be far less personal, not to mention similar to shouting into the wind for the poster.

All the off topic discussions are merely one thread discussions in bar and grill, it's not like there is a whole "Section" devoted to football, hunting or anything else not chase related, but hey if everyone wants a "universal" forum they might as well make a sports section, a hunting section, a vacation section, a shopping section, a entertainment section, a business section, a environmental section or anything else someone might have an interest in; they could even change the name from StormTrack to HobbyTrack. If you devote a whole portion of the forum to photography (or any other hobby for that matter) they'll be members joining who are simply joining for the photography topics, the reason I joined StormTrack was merely to enjoy the discussions between *chasers* in the "community" about chasing; I think ST has somewhat forfeited the sense of community a little already, and adding more off topic sections would only make it worse IMO; but hey it's not my forum to "Sell Out"

Maybe the equipment section could grow sub-divisions?

I agree with Jason on this one -- Stormtrack probably should avoid too many subforums. I'm a member of some forums that have dozens of "subforums", many of which lie idle 99% of the time and only act to clutter up the forum. IMO, we could continue to operate as we are... If the topic is about a particular camera or program (i.e. hardware or software), then the Equipment section is best; if the topic is about a technique, then the Weather & Chasing section likely is best. Just my 2 cents!

Edit: I think we should use the "Tags" feature when making new threads. For example, if a thread is about a new Canon 60D, then perhaps one could add the following tags to the thread: "Canon 60D, dSLR, digital photography". This makes searching for particular topics very easy - easier than using the forum "Search" feature sometimes. I haven't actually added any "tags" to threads I've started lately, but I'll try!

I don't see the harm in adding another forum I won't ever look at. ST's already about 90% stuff I could care less about. All I really want is to get at least one day at the top of the "marketplace" forum without someone posting on top of me  I at least wanna be the first thing people see that they're not going to buy.

Is bar and grill 50% of any of those topics? I didn't think so. The photography stuff is already on here taking up half the topics in a section. It only seems logical to give it its own. But that would equal selling out apparently.

I'm just sure all those interested in photography out there will be dying to do it on the storm forum. I mean if I left storm track and decided to just do the photography forum deal, I'd be searching out the scuba diving sites that have such a section. That or the photography sections on mountain climbing sites.

Seeing as though non-weather photography threads can already be posted in the Bar & Grill, it seems that those wanting a public photography sub-section would just like to gain more exposure for their pictures and drive more traffic to their site. Anyone that has a website is a self promoter and I really don't have a problem with this, but it's not really up to us, ST is a Tim-ocracy.

FWIW- I only use the 'New Posts' button and don't pay attention to which section a thread is in.

Probably not, but what happens when its no longer "the storm forum" and its the storm AND photography forum, then your likely to get a good deal of non-chasers joining to partake in the photography discussions; which might not be all bad depending on the direction you'd like to see the forum go, I personally like it as a storm forum, but again I'm not the owner.

I really don't think a branch off from equipment, for discussing cameras would really be all that bad, however the initial intentions of this discussion seemed to be aimed at "open" photography topics and threads, not limited to storm related stuff. If you want to see and critique or have critiqued, pictures of butterflies or anything else, find a photography forum, though I would go for a section with modeling photos....

I don't think ST is really much of a promoting source. If that is what one wants, I'd be showing off on the more popular forums out there....not ST.

Have it locked from view if that is such a concern for folks. Always something.

Honestly, I could care less; but it's snowing and I need something to do. I figured that was the main reason for wanting a dedicated photography section. A comparable thread posted in the B&G will get about 3x less views than the public sections. With the way it is now- if a photography thread is out there, people will find it. If it's weather related it's in the Weather Discussion section, if not, it's in the B&G.

It's always interesting how people see things differently.
FWLIW, I was thinking "weather photography" all along: Lightning, sprites, aurora, time-lapse, low-light video, lightning, etc. No butterflies or models invited :( Equipment discussions would naturally be somewhat less focused, but should still pertain to weather/atmospheric specific use.

Maybe the poll should be amended to clarify this ambiguity.

Every week someone asks "what lens is best for...?" or "how do I...?"
Having all the old threads in one location would make it easier to answer these questions. Perhaps we could even distill the more instructive topics into permanent FAQ threads.
Or not. :)
