Shawn, just read the thread you posted in. This discussion covers all of the good, bad, and ugly about data. Pick one and go.

I hate reading AT&T bashing post first thing in the morning cause they have the best network in the deep south that is even better than Alltels. First off it is not secret that the Iphone is the worst phone when it comes to reception that AT&T sells and there is no antenna port on it so it's a bad choice for chasers. The good about AT&T is that edge is everywhere that 3G is not and it blows away 1RTT away when it comes to speeds and latency. If you are going to be streaming and not in a 3G area then you will notice the difference with cleaner tower handoffs.

What you say is true. Not as much 3G but EDGE almost everywhere. One reason AT&T is a real option in my opinion. 3G does nothing for you if you don't have a signal

I'm an ex iPhoner and tried using it last year tethered to my laptop also thinking that Edge was going to be pretty reliable and I struggled immensely. It was so frustrating to have such a great tool like the iPhone with me but not get reception hardly anywhere. Seems like the crime of the century that such a great phone was put on AT&T. Uggh...anyway, this year I'm back with Verizon and the Blackberry Storm. Plus I've bought an amplifier so hopefully my problems with data acquisition will be less frustrating. It will certainly be nice to be able to tether the Storm without having to "tinker" with it like I had to do with the iPhone last year.

I cannot speak on the new generation of iPhone's that do have 3G but from the look of AT&T's 3G coverage map, it looks pretty sparse on the plains so I'd recommend an amplifier for sure. Just my two cents.
