Good morning everyone!!!!! I'm a graduate student in Sam Houston State's Homeland Security program and I'm earning a graduate certificate in Emergency Mgmt. I am.set to graduate next year. I'd love to merge this with my obsession with weather but not sure where to look. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Here are my recommendations.....

I attended Rose State College in Midwest City, Oklahoma, between 2019 and 2021. I majored in both Emergency Management and Atmospheric Sciences. During that timeframe, I volunteered with the American Red Cross and my local Emergency Management Agency. With the Red Cross, I did disaster response and responded to Hurricane Ida, where I set up and ran a disaster shelter for 2-weeks straight. In regards to volunteering with my local EMA, I was tasked with storm spotting in the county and also running the Emergency Operations Center before, during, and after severe weather events. This included forecasting severe weather setups and performing weather operations and coordinating with multiple different entities.

I'd highly recommend contacting your local EMA and seeing if there are any opportunities to volunteer with their agency to gain some experience in EM AND Combine your passion for weather. They likely have some sort of storm spotting program or even a program where you can be utilized in the EOC during a severe weather event.

According to your "About me" you're in Montgomery, Texas.
Here is the contact information for your local EMA.
phone: 936-523-3900
fax: 936-523-3910
email: [email protected]

Additionally, I'd recommend reaching out to your local VOADS and NGO's to see if there are any opportunities there as well. Some state Emergency Management Agencies like PEMA also have a Meteorologist employed by their agency that is solely tasked with providing weather information to their agency. But this I believe is highly rare.
