I meant to post this long ago, but better late than never.. Verizon has struck a deal with Pioneer Wireless, a local carrier in western Oklahoma, as part of the "rural 4g" program.

KINGFISHER, OK - Dec. 15, 2010 / -- Pioneer Cellular announced today it has entered into an agreement with Verizon Wireless to participate in the LTE in Rural America program. Under this agreement, Verizon Wireless will lease to Pioneer its 700 MHz upper C block wireless spectrum in the Pioneer service areas where Verizon Wireless has not constructed a network. Using the leased spectrum, Pioneer will construct and operate a 4G LTE network in western and southern Oklahoma serving Pioneer Cellular customers, Verizon Wireless customers and customers of other LTE in Rural America participants. In addition, Pioneer Cellular customers will have access to Verizon Wireless' 4G LTE network throughout the United States.

I wonder if that means 3g data (or any data) in Western OK from verizon will finally be available as well starting later this year. That would be awesome

Here's a great resource for keeping up with 4G news, products, maps, and roll out schedules: 4G Info. They also have a forum there specifically designed for 4G users, much the same as the EVDOinfo website most of us are familiar with.

Thanks for the link! I was looking for information about the Verizon 4G MiFi.

Thank goodness that pioneer and verizon finally came to an agreement. No cell service in NW OK has been a pain in the rear.

They should really get T-Mobile across the state 3G wise that would help me. Verizon is good tech wise but they don't offer the plans that T-Mobile does.

From what my product rep at Sprint is telling me, Sprint should start to roll out its 4G network across Tulsa and OKC around the first of March.

It is a shame that at this time it doesn't look like Sprint intends on pushing their 4G network into rual areas.

Sprint said that about 3G too. But yet now we have it more widespread rurally than ever. At least the WiMax is (I think) easier and cheaper to deploy per site.

My issue with Sprint is that I have unlimited 3g so i can either commit to a 5gb / mo plan for 3g and get unlimited 4g which is in 3 places i chase.. or stick to the 3g plan.. I'm going to Verizon once my contract is up but who knows things could change by then. I'm also going to order the IPhone from Verizon in a few days for what it's worth.. I just don't think the WIMAX is going to keep up with LTE it's not really designed for this kinda thing i would expect to see Sprint switch to LTE as their contracts with Clear Wave or Clear something the WIMAX company expire.

A user from OKC told me at work today ( I work for Verizon ) that they had 4g in Norman.... I was skeptical, but I went to clear.com and sure enough, yesterday, there was some 4g coverage added to the area... Just enough to cover Norman.. Also, Lawton.

Edit - 1143pm I just was on main street in Norman.. I just connected to Sprint 4g!

If you go to http://clear.com/coverage it will show 4g coverage in places you would never imagine such as Pittsburg, KS, Garden City KS and Coffeyville, KS to name a few. I can confirm this in the Pittsburg area as I DID connect to 4g while on Sprint since they use Clear for 4g. Check out there map.

This is somewhat related but I didn't want to start a new thread. Was browsing yesterday and found that AT&T is about to light up large areas of the west, notably all of North and South Dakota, and Western KS. Clearly this is not as good as Verizon, but it is certainly a big jump from where they were.

I would be highly surprised if they were able pull off half that coverage. Most of that 'future coverage' area they don't even have EDGE, and a lot of it they don't even have voice. Looks like an empty promise map to me.
