I disagree. If only 20 actually participate, what's the point of having 1200 lurkers or inactives.

Again, agree 100%

It would make far more sense to wipe the slate clean and see who comes back. That is the true gauge of if this forum needs the plug pulled.

I guess you could be right, but I get the sinking feeling that people who (1)already don't show up because they're not interested enough to log into the site won't (2)show up and then re-register just to use this place. Honestly, and this is nothing personal, but IMO the only real change that's needed to move forward is a power shift. The model is here and workable. The attitude adjustment a few have mentioned would likely be reached with an injection of fresh energy and ideas into this place. Then again, maybe the answer is to simply do nothing at all, because if this few of us are butting heads about basic fundemental actions moving forward, perhaps it's already good enough as it is. It just needs some TLC from someone in power.

FWIW, despite the fact I've got strong opinions about how this should be handled, I'm not going to "jump ship if I don't get my way." I'll use this place as long as it offers something that interests me enough to partake. I love the format. I just don't get inspired like I used to.

Certainly agree with that sentiment. I have no reason not to like TV. He's devoted his time for the past decade, but like an athlete past their prime on the hometown team, it's time to move on.

I have no idea why social media killed off this forum, so it's hard for me to offer solutions when I don't understand the problem. But I found out about this thread through a message via FB, so obviously to survive the forum needs to embrace things like social media to 'compete'. I want the forum to continue, and I don't think numbers are all that important--quality always beats quantity. The success of the forum is entirely dependent on the members. I think it's clear we need new leadership, and folks like Skip who have shown a willingness to put in the effort are obvious candidates to move things forward. My own recent lack of participation is partly due to the site problems (takes me multiple tries on various browsers just to log in...) and the vicious cycle of when I see nothing going on, I don't feel like posting to an empty audience. But I think this forum can survive with a core group, Id rather see that than some of the juvenile posts i remember from ST when it was in its 'heyday'.

Oh, and Shane has to be more caustic and piss more people off in his posts, or it won't be any fun at all. :)

Ya know, this kind of post may be one of the things that would make me want to stick around. We need a lighter atmosphere in here. I say swearing and coarse language be allowed as long as it's tasteful! ;)

I try to pop in and participate as much as I can. For me personally its a good chunk of the threads are always technology related these days, and thats one area I couldnt give 2 turds about. Whats the best data plan and how can I not get arrested flying my drone and what signal amp do I need to call my grandma from a ditch in the badlands. Bah.

I still like to post in forecast threads, DISC and REPORT threads. I think the over moderation got on a lot of peoples nerves. I know I got some really lame infractions back in the day. I understand there is a standard of quality that needs to be maintained, but damn, it was ridiculous a few years ago. We need some fun B&G topics again, especially in the off season.

I would like to see it stay, but at the same time if it went away it really wouldnt effect me. I am always willing to participate in a good thread.

If you try and curse, it just deletes the word. I'm sure there's ways around that. Fu.cking lame.

For something completely different, anyone else remember the targeting game we played a few years ago? Let's bring that back this off season!

There are several developers kicking around the idea of a chase game that requires less "pen and paper" work, and more just doing stuff and tracking it. Who knows if it will come to fruition or not. Either way, I don't see it solving the core issues the forum has.

The chase target game was interesting for me, in that it really shed some light on how awful a forecaster I am "on paper". I completely busted on days playing the game that I actually killed on in the real world. Weird.

Maybe we should have players cite their methodology and run studies on it?

My methodology can't be calibrated. Probably why I'm not good as a partner or paper forecasting. I won't completely revist this topic (which has its own thread), but basically I'm hard-wired as more of a reactionary type chaser, and much less of an analyzer/results of data typer chaser. The maps used on all the past virtual targeting games looked like scrambled eggs to me. I can't look at code or 1s and 0s and articulate through that analysis what is actually going to happen hours later based on that data. I can however be outside at 2pm, and know whether to stay put, move (and which direction), or start finding a place to eat. I have no scientific method to calibrate that process with, but it works enough of the time that I never quit chasing due to totally sucking at it. Perhaps "dumb luck" best describes it?
