Just to let you know I got back from travels over the New Years break and am in the process of getting caught up.

Just to let you all know I've reached a decision, but I'm checking first with Tim Marshall to make sure he has no problems with the plan going forward. Before handing over the site to anyone, I feel it's essential, and appropriate, to make sure that his opinions and any concerns are considered.

I know a couple of you have entertained the idea of him running the website, but this was never in the cards even back in the 1990s, and I don't think I know anyone with a busier schedule than him. Although it's very unlikely, if he proposes such an idea I will be receptive to it.

Tim

It's not a change we're making this spring, rather the change will be made in the next 1-2 weeks.

I can tell you my own side: I am stepping down, as I agree the site deserves someone with new energy and enthusiasm. As far as other details, it isn't appropriate for me to jump the gun while waiting on Tim Marshall to see the e-mail and respond. It's normal for me to hear back from him within 24-48 hours.

So...any word on the server going down for a few minutes earlier this evening?

While I do not post near the amount as others, mainly cause I don't think I am qualified to weigh in on most subjects, I have been coming here for years for information and reading as well as the chat room. I so hope to see this forum continue. In some fashion or another. I feel very sad thinking of the thought that it could end, but based on this thread, there feels to be hope.

Probably table locking in the database during the backup causing everything to hang until it completes. If so this can be mostly mitigated by converting the tables from MyISAM to InnoDB if applicable. And/or move the backup to the wee hours when it matters less.
