ST's Future Discussion

Tim, I still stand by my vote of Steve Miller OK to become the new leader of the site. I whole-heartedly agree that he is the right person to lead this site into the modern era of discussion board/archiving for Stormtrack. I believe he will appoint the right people that the people agree with and trust with the fundamentals of a successful forum. With the right leadership and member participation, this site could be considered active once more. I just want to remind everyone that yes, new leadership is a step in the right direction. But ultimately it's our responsibility to create and discuss new content. No matter if it means beating a dead horse, more discussion and debate will create results.

This really is an important step you're taking Tim and I support the idea of selecting the right person to lead us into the future. I believe you're right that this should not be rushed, because it really is an extremely important decision. Everyone with even a tiny investment in ST needs to weigh in though as to who our next leader should be. I don't want a situation where members say nothing, so perhaps the mass e-mail idea is a good one that should help alleviate that problem. It's very encouraging to see some newer members chiming in and letting us know how they feel. I'm all for hearing from those who generally don't say much, because their opinion matters just as much as the next guy.

Is there someone you've always felt/thought would be a good successor to you Tim? I'm not particularly thrilled with the fact that we're only dealing with who I nominated when you asked for names last week. With what Patrick said about it being a privilege and he would not seek the position but would consider it if asked, I believe we need to circle back and seriously consider where he's coming from. Just out of curiosity, how was the torch passed from Tim Marshall to you sixteen years ago?

As an occasional poster on ST, I would hate to see it go away. I am still a young meteorologist and the folks on this site have been worlds of help to me in developing my craft.

Still stand by Steve Miller OK as well. The guy has run many successful businesses and gotten the right people to do the job in each of them. He'll also be able to devote a pretty good amount of time to the day to day operations of this site as he's one of the easiest people I know to get ahold of.

Pass the torch to Steve.

Tim, I applaud your openness and willingness to make changes. I believe due to his longtime experience here, Tim deserves some type of honorary role in the forum even if the helm is fully handed over.

I haven't yet posted in this thread but have been following. I also support SMOK as the owner / administrator going forward. Tim, this board has taught me more about chasing than I have learned anywhere else. Thank you! I also applaud your willingness to make changes for the good of the board.

ill donate $50 to the site after the new year comes in to help with costs. damn car is in the shop right now so I am a bit strapped at the moment. lol.

edit: I am good with SMOK taking over as admin and running the site.

I think it's time to embrace social media, but let's keep this forum alive as well. There's an invaluable wealth of knowledge that has accumulated here over the years. It needs to be preserved and archived like the Stormtrack print magazines.

Over the past few days I've been discussing with some of the staff and other chasers about implementing an actively edited Stormtrack Facebook page. I think it's long overdue, and I think we can address several of the concerns that people have including the issues that Dan brings up.

There's always been a centralized hub of storm chaser communication. It started with the print magazine and has progressed in various digital forms such as mailing lists like WX-Chase and forums like this one. The format has changed several times, but there's always been a hot spot of discussion for what is currently happening in chasing. That is until now. That hub is gone, and the storm chasing community has been broken up into splintered fragments strewn across social media. If you aren't following the right people, aren't in the right friends circles or cliques, you lose out on what’s happening.

Let's try to bring that hub back and let's embrace social media, which is where all of the chaser traffic has migrated. A Facebook page could be a great way to provide real time news and photo sharing from all corners of the chaser community, and I think it's possible to get closer to Stormtrack's roots as a print magazine in the process. Dan expressed concerns about the quality of content on Facebook. A Facebook page would allow a group of editors, not unlike those of a magazine, to pick which content gets published to the page. Stormtrack editors could corral high quality content from chasers and meteorologists that is posted to the news feed and then share it to the Stormtrack page. Readers would be free to comment on the shares or start their own discussions as well, but editor selected shares allow the content of the page to remain high. The key is to maintain a good sized group of active chasers from diverse backgrounds and social circles as editors so that we get a steady stream of posts from across social media.

One huge advantage the forum has over Facebook is the organization of posts into sub forums and threads that are sorted and searchable. We'll sorely miss that organization, but I think there are ways to provide some order to the chaos of social media. The timeline feature allows you to view posts from specific points in time. Editors could also use hash tags when they share posts to group posts by topic. The Stormtrack Facebook page will become a sprawling list of various topics with multiple concurrent threads going for the same event, but by selecting a hash tag you could get all the posts from that topic. On the forum we have tightly regulated FCST threads in the Target Area, while on Facebook posts of greatly varying quality about upcoming setups are strewn randomly across the news feed. Editors could hand pick insightful and informative posts about setups and tag them with something like #forecast-2015-03-28. Readers can then click those tags to get all forecasts for that event. Anytime an editor sees an account or photo from an event, they could share it with #reports-yyyy-mm-dd and then you've got all photos and accounts in one spot.

The page would also provide several advantages over the forums. Moderating would be at a minimum as editors are selecting what gets shared to the page. Readers are then free to hide or block content or people they don't wish to see. Participation from chasers isn't even explicitly required as the editors can simply share people's public posts, which eliminates the need to maintain an active members list, only a group of active editors that can be refreshed.

I'm interested in any comments, concerns, suggestions, or criticisms for the Facebook page. I'd also like to hear from folks who are both active chasers and forum participants who'd like to be editors for the page. It's important that we maintain this forum, but it's time to extend the conversation to social media.
this. spot on. too much info just to let it disappear.

I'd like to see SMOK, DD or anyone who has the time and devotion to maintain this site. To allow this site and the treasure in the archives to simply fade away would be a travesty.

Tim, I applaud your openness and willingness to make changes. I believe due to his longtime experience here, Tim deserves some type of honorary role in the forum even if the helm is fully handed over.

I agree with this. First, it's with only about 5 minutes thought that I post this. But what every happens, who ever takes over, we can't just forget the people who started it. How about maybe on the home page, not the fourm a written history of storm track starting with David Hoadley who founded the newsletter to Tim Marshall who took over, to Tim V. who started the online forum we have now. Maybe a hall of fame, or just an honor roll of some type. We need to remember these people.

My vote also lies with Steve Miller. Nothing against the other names that have been thrown out there, but just knowing what Steve brings to the table is enough to get my vote.

This is exactly what I think we need to be doing. Thanks to all who decided to weigh in today with their thoughts and for not holding back. I was also encouraged to see the new banner ad up top from the man over at Convective Development. Thanks for your confidence in Stormtrack Andy and bringing us your business, we do appreciate it!

It's probably a good time to politely remind ST members to disable AdBlock for stormtrack.org - those ads help pay the bills, and I've never seen a malicious ad or an ad that really slowed down the page here.

It looks like there's a bit of Facebook campaigning going on, as I'm seeing several names pop up on this thread that haven't posted more than a handful of times in the past couple years. That's a good thing. We need feedback from everyone, but I hope that if this feedback is taken to heart and acted upon, that these people don't just disappear to Facebook again leaving the forum the quiet place that it has become. The reasons that people spend all their time on Facebook instead of Stormtrack needs to be addressed. I'm still not convinced that these reasons are who owns the forum, how active the forum owner is, or other details like the real name policy, structure of Target Area and moderation. It's more likely the format of the forum itself and that the chasing community has moved on. If someone took over WX-CHASE from Chris Novy and added new features, would you be eager to join and participate in a mailing list again?

Thanks to the folks that threw my name out there. I'd be happy to take on the responsibility, but not alone. There are periods when I can devote a lot of time to Stormtrack, and there are periods when I have zero time for internet forums. I'm happy to back SMOK as well and help out if I can. I'm sure he has many ideas on how to revitalize Stormtrack and the time and energy to make to it happen.

Overall, I want to see the content on this site preserved and that the forum remains an open venue for all chaser discussion, not dominated by one clique or by those who contribute minimally back to the community.
