ST's Future Discussion

As an admin I felt as though I had to give this every chance to succeed, but at this point it seems to be nothing more than a charade. When the site went down the other day, which happened to be the exact same day as last month, and to boot it presented itself exactly the same this month as last, my blood pressure jumped a few points and it has yet to come down. If the hosting bill cannot be paid each month with money that's been freely given for that purpose, we've reached the end of the road. I could write several paragraphs about how this makes me feel, but there isn't a good reason to waste my time now, because it no longer matters.

I think I'm about to jump ship too. Like what's been said, we get a big uproar of people with ideas and legitimate plans, yet non of them happened. First order of business was to get someone else at the top OR have Tim become much more active in restructuring some things. Neither has happened last month. I'll probably still use the chat room but other than that...not sure. I have all my photos and chase logs on my PC, so I personally am not losing anything of mine here.

I wouldn't donate a penny to this site unless someone showed me that it would actually be used for something worthwhile, either revamping the site or archiving it.
And without the presence of the owner of this forum to directly address those issues, I find myself saying thanks but no thanks.

Yes, I'm quoting myself from a month ago. But it seems my instincts were correct. Sadly.

I re-read Tim's post from 11-27. If he is sincere, we may yet hear from him. (I'm not down-playing the recent outage). Also, maybe Skip will chime in with the latest status on his end.

It seems a little hasty to just call it quits. For what it's worth I don't really see the value in a storm chaser database, and I don't want my information included in that. I get enough crazy people trying to track me down from out of nowhere without being in a public registry like that, thank you.

I'm a little curious about these outages. I seem to remember hearing that this forum is backed by MySQL. Now MySQL isn't my favorite thing in the world, but it probably shouldn't fall over the way it does. What's the actual issue here, and what's the fix? Is it something that a knowledgeble individual could help with?

we may yet hear from him.

Don't hold your breath, chances of hearing from Tim anytime soon is slim to none. I really wish Tim would have listened to what we all suggested, instead he comes on and makes a few posts refusing to give up ownership of this site and making empty promises of being more active, then he disappears and site goes down for a full day and what do we here from Tim? Nothing.

I think I'm just sick of a dead forum. The fact that I'm on another forum with only 1200 members and read dozens of new posts a day is sad. I really just wanted the same experience with weather. But yeah, Tim hasn't shown up even after the outage. Kinda shows the bad habits of the owner. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted guys.

Rob, the idea of the SCDB is its value as a site attraction and a useful utility. Participation is completely voluntary and inclusion of any personal contact details would be optional as well.

I'm going to be logging off of Stormtrack for the final time tonight. If anyone would like to get in touch with me RE a new site (which is already in the works), my email is [email protected].

Joey, I agree. Now is the time for the torch to be passed along. Not next week, not next month, not next year.

I am completely sympathetic to Tim's personal difficulties and have no problem there. My problem is with the continued insistence to hold on to the reins of ST even if it means the site's death. That decision is Tim's to make, and a decision to keep holding on at this point is a decision to kill the institution of Stormtrack that has been around since 1977. Holding on to the site in its current state means holding on to nothing in a short time. Simple as that.

But that's because (by your own admission) you're an asshole online because (also by your own admission) there are fewer real-time consequences. I don't know anybody that has as many issues as you seem to have regarding nutjobs online. Try biting your tongue once in a blue moon and maybe that will help.

The above was all sarcasm, based on a quite entertaining online relationship I've developed the past year or so in the chatroom nobody uses

As for Stormtrack, it doesn't matter what Tim or anyone else does. People simply don't use this forum anymore, and I could f*cking care less.

If anything, perhaps as a "last goodbye", maybe Tim could officially kill the forum on New Year's Eve, as the clock ticks down.

If Tim doesn't pass the torch off to someone else, then sadly, people will have to use Wayback Machine to view what StormTrack use to be.

Rob' it's a "who's who in storm chasing" type list. The old one was fairly popular in its day. It lets the chaser post their web site link, favorite images, Facebook page link, answer a few fun questions about chasing, etc. How valuable is it to anyone? I don't know, that's not the point. It's supposed to be something fun, and probably valuable to some who want a place to post a link to their site. As I said, if you're not sold on it, that's fine - you don't need to participate. There's no commercial motive whatsoever. The old one was never used that way.

The point is to try to do *something* to bring people together here, and that's just one idea of many. I offered it because it's already half built and will be easy to resurrect. If you have other ideas, let's hear it! I'm open. The thing is, whatever we decide to do isn't going to happen on StormTrack, since we can't even get simple access or any cooperation to even get started on anything, or even keep the site from going down for days at a time.

I'd like to publicly apologize to Rob for being a meanie. Clearly I don't understand 90% of what's typed in the chatroom. But in my defense, there's so much sarcasm and snarkiness, who could blame me for being confused.
