serial port issue

I'm setting my stuff up on my new laptop, and I ran into problems with the serial port. There is no actual port on it, so I installed one of my USB adapters. But after I installed one, something weird happened.

I go into Mapsource, and it keeps trying to connect to Port3, which doesn't exist. I also had installed Serial Splitter, and it too sees a Port 3, which doesn't exist. Only Com 4, the adapter port, shows up in Device Manager.

I'm running XP. Any advice?

If you have access to your BIOS, see if you can go in and turn it off somehow.. with XP and a laptop, I don't know, though.. I may be wrong.. been a long time since I've had a serial port issue! :roll: If I remember how I fixed that, I'll let you know!
