New ham seeks advice

Congrats on getting your license, Jody! There will be much fun/comraderie in store for you, I believe. As I found out almost exactly a year ago when I got my ticket, there is virtually no end to what you can do with these beasts, especially if you aren't afraid to experiment a little.

Maybe we'll hook up on the plains sometime this season. Hope you enjoy your new hobby!
My favorite 2 meter radio is the ICOM 2200H - http://www.icomamerica.com/products/amateur/2200h/ It has plenty of power at 65 watts.

Jim, I'll definitely second you on this one. I also own this radio, and it is one sweet rig. Nice power, and tough as nails, too.

Have enjoyed many hours on the western reflector with it.
