i will mst likely b using a 1995 jeep grand cherokee laredo.

my backup is a 1987 bronco 2

ok my last thing, im tryin to decide whether to get the folding antenna or the solid, im using a triple 5"magnet mount

The foldover antenna makes you a hero at the drive-thru burger joints. You won't be breaking out their flourescent tubes that way. In real terms, if you have a triple mag mount for the 2m antenna - you have a very stout base. I think the rail mount with the foldover antenna is how most guys are doing it - though...

The fold-over versus one-piece debate is best answered by you since your typical vehicle usage and such will determine what you need. I don't think you'll see a loss in performance either way.

I will say, you've got plenty of holding power with three 5" magnets, lol! I've run a 5" single magnet NMO mount with the same Diamond antenna for almost five years without the thing ever sliding a bit. I do have the tri-mag for hamstick HF antennas, but those things carry WAY more windload. Better safe than sorry though, I'm just giving you a hard time.

As for the drive-thru's, Rob makes a good point, but most of those issues can be cured by mounting it to the right side of your vehicle ;)

I also have the FT-2800, it has the weather frequencies built in and it has built in scan where it will alert you if tones are sounded on one of weather radio frequencies. I really like this feature! You can also use it as a traditional FM scanner to pick up police, fire, EMT, etc traffic as long as they are not using a trunking system such as P25.

OK, so I am wondering is it worth it to get a 2m/440 dual band? Is anyone using 440 during chasing? I am really only interested in talking to my chase partners.

I am also wondering how does one effectively know what repeaters to use as you travel back and forth across the plaines? I found a GRL3 placefile, but it does not work. Some of the books I have looked at list repeaters by area or town names, and frankly I have no idea which one is the closest to me position at that any particular moment.

Ideas??

Jake,
I dont think you will have a problem with mag mounts on your Jeep.I have used them for about 10 years now with no real problems on my Explorer. The nice thing is you can remove your stuff after season and have them out of your way like I do.What length 2m are you considering that you need a triple mag mount?? I have 5" mounts and smaller for my cell, ham, scanner,cb and they have been through it all, knock on wood.I will have a Wilson 2m 5/8 WL mag mount for sale(cheap) that stands 49 inches high and has served me well.Only selling to upgrade to a RuffRider.I dont know much about ham stuff, just offering some ideas...

As far as a radio,I use a Yaesu FT-1802 and really like it.Small profile and serves me well and you can probably get one for around 140.00.

Probably not. Very few Skywarn nets operate on UHF, but they do exist. Around here we have one county that does, but they patch into their VHF repeated.

That makes it a little bit easier... If your partners are using UHF - you'll need a UHF radio. Otherwise, you won't.

Where you are will determine if its really useful to have 70cm for chasing. In Georgia, it was almost a necessity, as at least a dozen counties, particularly around the Atlanta and Savannah Metro areas, use 70cm, as do several of Peach Tree City's primary 'backbone' repeaters.

In areas of denser population or the really highly organized programs like NWS PTC, you'll likely find some nets that operate on 70cm, at least as a backup. Seeing as the 2 meter repeater frequency pairs have been depleted in huge portions of the country, 70cm is seeing the most rapid growth in repeater coverage right now. It's logical to assume that SKYWARN will start to see more and more activity on that band as time goes on.
