Mike Smith

I am going to be presenting "Miracle at Greensburg" at the Greensburg High School at 7pm Wednesday, October 21st. It tells the story of how the meteorological profession saved more than 200 lives that night.

Everyone is welcome! It should be a special evening.

Sounds like a wonderful presentation. Will it be taped or recorded? I'd enjoy seeing it if it will be archived.

Mike,

I'm going to second that, will it be taped? I think that would be fascinating and from my spotter point of view it would be one more story of how the pros and J.Q. Public can work together!

Just heard the city manager talk about their long-term recovery plans and "going green." It wasn't the tree-hugging that I expected, and was quite impressed with their projects.

It is going to be taped with the tape to be used in conjunction with the release of the book about the development of the warning system that I hope (expect, pray) will be out next spring.

I am also talking with AMS HQ about presenting this at the 2010 AMS summer meeting in State College (closer to Michigan!).

Stay tuned for more!!

Evening talk at Greensburg

Mike, I'm in Arizona...so of course I won't be able to attend. But...I would certainly be willing to buy a couple of taped recordings of your event. I really wish I could be there. You are right....I'm sure this will be a very, very special evening for all. Just being in the room...sensing all the powerful emotions from those that survived that horrific night would be an incredible, once in a lifetime experience in itself. Damn, I wish I could be there. Best of luck and break a leg. Joel in Tucson

For any meteorologists/chasers who I have not met before, please feel free to introduce yourselves -- I'd love to meet you.

That said, please let me make a suggestion: My colleague, Michelle Strecker (red haired, white AccuWeather shirt), will be there and will help 'direct traffic' after the talk as I suspect many of the survivors may wish to talk with me and I want them to be able to do so.

So, let Michelle know who you are if I am in a crowd at that moment and she'll make sure we get a chance to talk.

I may have to break away for some taping, but I plan to stay long enough to chat with everyone who would like to do so.

Hope to see you Wednesday evening!!

Mike, not to seem like a jerk but I found your wording a little strange.
When you refer to "meteorological profession saved more than 200 lives" were you also refering to the spotters, chasers and law inforcement as well?

I would love to attened but will not be able to. Please give my best to all.

This sounds like a great presentation to see. To bad I will be stuck in at work here in Lawrence.

I'd love to meet you one day Mike. I remember when weatherdata use to do the newspaper forecasts for the Wichita Eagle. I also recall seeing a presentation about GIS and meteorology here at KU a few years ago!

If i didn't have to be at work that night at 11pm I would certainly make the drive out see this. This is a great message you are presenting and I am sure will be one hell of a presentation.
