Do you guys plan to address any of the other topics discussed in this thread or just users making reference to blow jobs?

Yeah, is anything mentioned in this thread other than "boobies" going to be discussed? Seems to me that most people want some kind of a change, and if nothing is done people may end up elsewhere, thats probably the best option right now, since with such a huge forum, you'll never be able to please everyone, since no one can have the self control to not open "that" thread.

OK, make a simple list of issues, I'll go first. Just a short simple list...then others can add to it. Then discuss. At least let's get organized about this and address specific issues. BTW...it doesn't matter if you have a POV, just list what you feel is an issue being argued about here.

A big issue is having so many people that aren't chasers on here, that's what made this forum so unique to me, so different from other weather forums, because People here actually chase! There used to be tons of great threads going on that were very informative, So much good information in forecasting threads and report threads ( an excellent reference) but it seems this isn't the case anymore, we are really loosing that "edge" on other forums by letting more and more members (that aren't chasers or don't plan to chase) join that don't have anything to add, seems like that more threads that have little information and just clutter the board has caused the veteran chasers to post less, and thus ST benefits everyone less, because people that have valuable information to share don't want to post anymore. I could be wrong, but I thought a requirement for membership was that you had to be a chaser, that's why there was an application process.

I think you have to have storms to have forecast, report, and discussion threads....not many storms in 2009

I'm very disappointed it came to that. Not much else to say. I really do think Ill be here less...if at all.

I completely understand and respect the fact ST strives to be a quality oriented forum but jesus christ...ONE boobie picture thread and a few crybabies throw a bitch/moan fit about it. Get over yourselves. Lets all bitch and moan about a thread of a few people posting good humor but not take the initiative to start these quality weather threads youre all bitching about their not being.

Heres a thought...try solving the problem first hand by posting a quality thread then, instead of sitting on your ass being a forum troll just waiting for something to report/bitch/moan about.

This all started from one snarky comment from one person.

This has turned into a freedom of speech rally, but this isn't the street.

You guys calling this forum socialist or communist etc etc really need to give your head a shake. REALLY.

I agree with the posters who have said that careless, thoughtless comments like the one that started this are the reason a lot of folks don't bother posting in here anymore.

Turning your head when someone drops something like that is impossible.
There are lots of other places you can go and snipe on people, why do some feel the need to do it here?

Back to the basics, why can't folks just be civil?

I am not a hater. I just don't agree with storm track letting people talk about the female body parts in a disrespectfull way. Some people need to show some respect to the female members here. I guess the Christian base here will start to diminish now that that thread will stay up and others like it may start appearing.

As a female member I am not offended. I can not speak for every female but what’s wrong with a little humor? I for one got a good laugh out of that thread. It’s sad it has to come to this.

What would you want your kids to read? Maybe that should be the question. Some kids are interested in storms and chasing them; they will invariably see what we put up here. They know how to use a search engine - don't they?

Well I for one think ST is fantastic!
As a resource for stormchasers, spotters, forecasters and academics it is invaluable.

I've read all the posts in this thread and most of the others in the threads that have caused the scramash recently. I've also posted a few times appealing for civility and so on. But I do find myslef torn between the 'Ignore it if you don't like it' and the 'wow that's not nice, report' camps. I understand why some are annoyed either way, but you know what? That's one of the things that makes this world of ours so great - diversity. Fortunately there are 101 ways to chase a tornado and just as many different things that makes us all tick. I'd hate to live in a world where everything was the same or even in a world where I could predict a tornado to the minute and it's exact location - boring!

That's why some people find 1 joke funny, others don't and yet more are offended. It's why some people are more direct, some circumspect, shy, witty, snide, dry.

The point I'm making is it's equally crazy getting worked up by a post (or posts) that you don't like as it is getting mad at people who do when you don't (if you see what I mean?).

It's all those differences between us that grease the wheels, make it fun, educational, sobering, thought provoking. Don't let it make you angry, those frown lines will stick if the wind direction changes.

Tell you what, we'll put the issue up for a public poll and try to see where things stand. The rule will not be overturned on a simple majority, but if it reveals that only a rather small fraction of people are opposed we'll reverse the decision.

I understand there's some serious SDS going on but the bottom line is we're not here to shepherd the Bar & Grill Forum and it's stated quite clearly in the TOS that there is not any kind of entitlement to unrestrained speech, much less an entitlement to post about things that appear to go against our community standards. However we'll do the poll to see where exactly the standards are right now.

I totally agree with Shelli. I thought it was one of the funniest threads ever and found nothing offensive with it.

If the children of members are logging in under a parent's password to gain access to a restricted area, then those parents may want to invoke a bit more parental control.

The board is not designed to cater to children-- it's a forum primarily for adult storm chasers who are out in the field really doing it. If you're going to worry about what some kid might find via a search engine, there are much scarier things to worry about than a thread with the word "boobies" in the title. Ultimately, parents need to control their children's access to the Internet-- and it is not my job to censor my discussions for random twelve-year-olds.

P.S. Every one of my posts on Stormtrack has been totally G-rated anyway-- but I'm just saying, I really dislike this presumption that this place should have the same communication code as the Disney.com Website.

Josh, unfortunately although the target is for those who chase (well mostly), the simple fact is this is a very public site. With the exception of Bar and Grill, everything else is visible and read by many minors. Children are especially fascinated with storm chasers and this site I'm sure get's it's share or the youngsters. Now if this was a totally private site, and one that isn't visited by business people, NWS personnel and other people looking for good resources than it would matter, but this site is a resource for those folks and more, and the content published is a reflection of the users, posters, and owners.

I'll pipe in with an alternate suggestion.

Instead of simply removing members or restricting admission to the forums based on the label of "chaser", "non-chaser", or whatever you can think of, how about creating a merit system where people earn/lose points based off of the quality of the posts they add to this forum? For example you could give 10 points to someone who makes a truly quality post to this thread, 0 points for someone who makes a post that does not contribute to the quality of this thread, but a post that also is not detrimental or demeaning to the forum, and take away 10 points when someone posts something that is off-topic, rude, or in some other way in violation of the rules or objectives of this forum.

You would have to restrict the point giving to non B&G areas for this to even be considered. However, you could do a trial period, say 3 or 6 months, see how many points people accumulate, then set some sort of standard (like you must accumulate 100 points over 6 months to stay in the club).

It's kind of like the infractions policy, only you get points for adding to the quality of the forum instead of only being punished for breaking the rules.

I know this would be difficult for the mods to enforce given their number relative to that of the regular members, but it's a way to weed out members that are not contributing to the quality of Stormtrack.

And, as has already been established, this silly talk that got a few people upset happened in the Bar & Grill forum anyway-- which is exactly the area where it should happen and which isn't open to random surfers.

Like I said, it doesn't really matter to me personally-- if you look at my history of posting here, my posts are 100% family friendly. But I really, strongly disagree in principle with this idea that we all need to talk in a child-friendly way on a forum that isn't intended for children. Again, parents need to supervise their children's Internet activity-- that is the issue.

Also, as I pointed out before.... Any kid surfing Internet discussion forums unsupervised is coming across content much, much scarier than that silly "boobies" thread.

If a kid were to somehow see that thread, and understand what all those innuendos mean, the damage was already done prior. If there were actual naked pictures of boobs with a caption that said "what you fed on as a child" that would be totally different than a picture of doorknockers that says "how about some knockers"

You have to be logged in for someone to even see a thread in the B & G, they wouldn't open on Search engines.
