hey all,

im very new to chasing. i live in toronto and have been visiting sites and reading up on storm chasing in u.s. for quite a while now. my question is where does one start if he wants to document a team of experienced chasers for a few weeks or even months in their environment, doing their thing. any and all suggestions would be appreciated. thanks in advance!

You may want to put an advertisement in the Marketplace forum with full information about who you are, the company or school you represent, and the purpose of the documentation. In general, chasers bringing non-chasers along tends to be a source of distraction and can be a logistical problem, so the more you are seen as good company and someone who can jump in on a chase on a moment's notice, the better. Contributing gas money is always a plus.

You may have better luck accompanying tour groups on a gratis basis if you are in any kind of position to give them free publicity, though we do recommend you run the names by our members here as a few tour groups have a controversial history and questionable success rates.

Also you should repost your ad in March or April as chase season gets geared up.

Arkan,

Welcome to ST. I am not a chase team member and cannot hook you up with one, but can you be more specific in your question? Are you seeking to travel with and film/photograph a chase expedition? Or are you wanting to examine data and collected imagery without being present on the chase itself?

If you are experiencing ST for the first time now, while convective activity is at a low point, you can look forward to checking out the Target Area section, within which March-into-July Forecasts & Nowcasts will buzz with a marvelous scale of items -- from suppositions to detailed pinpoint forecasts and real-time observations from lab and field -- all composed by a variety of weather observers who range from the purely intuitive to the highly educated. Mobile internet connectivity allows chasers to post photo and video captures while in pursuit, and later wrap up the experience in detailed report in the Post-Storm Discussion list.

Some of the best photographers and videographers anywhere are regular contributors here. We may argue amongst ourselves, especially in the offseason, but we are incredibly blessed with talent that knows what to do and when to do it. If you make ST part of your daily ritual for one year, you will have 'documented' a batch of experiences that will help prepare you for your own chases. We seem to be enjoying more significant reports and images from Canada in the last few years, so you will be reading and hopefully interacting with chasers familiar with areas close to you.

Of course, nothing compares to going out after a storm, but you can train your brain here to help prepare yourself for the mistakes everyone makes while starting out. I've been starting out for about thirty years...

I'm sure others will respond here -- good luck and enjoy.
