Hurricane Noel (was TS Noel, TD16, Invest 90L)

Anyone up for a Gale or Storm Force Wind Chase. Here's the latest 3pm forecast discussion from NWS Boston. WOW:

"LEANED TOWARD THE GFS...WHICH HAS A VERY HIGH WIND MAXIMA MOVING ACROSS CAPE COD AND THE ISLANDS SATURDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING...ON THE ORDER OF 50-60 KTS SUSTAINED AND GUSTS OVER 70 KTS. FEEL VERY GOOD CONFIDENCE WITH THIS...AS THE MODELS HAVE BEEN SLOWLY MOVING THIS LOW FURTHER WEST OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF DAYS /MAINLY THE GFS/...AS WELL AS THE TROPICAL PREDICTION CENTER. HAVE ISSUED A HIGHWIND WATCH FOR THIS TIMEFRAME."

Well this is up my alley.....i live on the cape and im ready to go for as far as chasing/spotting concerns. im mad that i cant find my dig camara, Got a camcorder though, As of today the national weather service in taunton is saying that wind gusts could be 65+.....i just hope it moves farther inland to get the full brunt, now if it moves out to sea farther then winds will be 25-35 mph plus some higher gusts. just have to wait and see!

With the Low-level center of Noel moving faster to the NE under the strong SW flow aloft, shear actually DECREASES (storm-relative, that is).

A fully recurved system removed from the effects of directional deep-layer (6 KM) shear - A.K.A. all the system moving rapidly NE (not just the "top" of it) favors intensification.

This is that the NHC failed to pick up with Wilma's intensity forecast back in 2005.

Noel shall continued accelerating NNE, while becoming more subtropical, then extratropical. Canada (Nova Scotia) should get whacked by this one by as early as Saturday AM.

The large wind / wave envelope already took a toll on Florida's beaches in terms of erosion.

BTW: Was anyone on this near Andros / Nassau, tickets were like $170 from Miami??

What timing. After a quiet season for the US, Noel is going to brush by New York the day before the marathon. For this I am thankful as I do not want to be running across the Verrazano Narrows Bridge in 50mph winds.

I'll be in New York all weekend with high rise roof access.

Most of coastal CT and the Cape & Islands are still in full leaf, could be lots of tree damage if these winds make it down to the surface.

Good morning,

It only costs $6 at the brushless car wash; where you can experience sustained winds of 65-70 mph. if you get out of your car; or just don't use the car.

LOL, that is funny ... I actually did that back in May 2005 for kicks! The picture below says it all!

carwash.jpg

Jeff Gammons KG4PGA from Weathervine filmed myself (left, with my mullet hair blowing upwards) and fellow chaser Scott Blair KD5KOW (right) standing in 80MPH+ winds in this open air dryer for an Oklahoma detail shop.

This only costed 75 cents!

Anyway - Back to the main subject...

Noel accelerating NE, still a hurricane as per NHC, but according to the visible satellite this morning (11-2) it appears a dry slot has formed in behind it, I would consider this subtropical as the air in that dry slot soon reaches Noel's core. The transition to extratropical is just beginning...

Well im ready for this storm, just to let everyone know ill be taking pics of the storm whenever i get out of work so i hope the power goes out in the morning so i can be out all day chasing! ill keep all of you posted!

YES,

Chris, BNVN has footage from Nassau and Long Island. The flooding was pretty intense on video.

We can't post it on line due to agreements we made but I can email you a low rez copy.

Nantucket airport is gusting to 54mph and I see a buoy at the end of Long Island Sound has sustained 40knot winds.

170 feet up in Manhattan its gusting to a whopping 10mph, street level is even quieter.

Its overcast but still dry in the low levels with dewpoints in the upper 30's. Maybe Manhattan will see some higher gusts if those rain bands can reach us.

I am at KHPN now and I had checked out the beach earlier today in Stamford, CT, with the hopes of windsurfing. Its really doing nothing here. I didnt see a single whitecap. Not one. Weak-side... offshore winds. Ugg. The islands and parts of the east facing new england shores may still get a decent show, especially nantucket.

With the 70-75 MPH gusts recorded in Nantucket last 3 hours, widespread wind damage has also been reported throughout many parts of Eastern MA and Cape Cod. Last check of the wave hight SE of Cape Cod was 31 FEET!! Wow.

Falmouth, MA: G 63 mph
Hyannis: G 60 mph

And, of course...who can forget this humurous observation:

(YES...THE ASOS IS REPORTED SNOW FOR ABOUT 9 MINUTES ALONG WITH 65 MPH WINDS).

Station 44008 - NANTUCKET 54NM Southeast of Nantucket:
Wind gusts: 65 MPH
Wave Heights: 34 Feet

Wind Gust (GST):
