Hotels/Motels to stay AWAY from on the plains

Sleeping bag and sleeping mat. Sleep in the back of my Xterra, Its a rough way to go but I cant afford a bed bug infestation in my home and I definitely cant get a comfortable nights sleep in any motel room bed anyways. "Chasing - Its an adventure".

This setup worked good until some yahoo came through the parking lot doing donuts at 3am. There's defintately some scary hotels out there.

Actually was a perfect night no bugs! Temps were down to mid 50's. Goodland, Kansas the night before we all busted NW to the Goshen Co. Wyoming tornado last year. I do carry a mosquito net with me though, and works awesome!

Country Club Drive Motel in Colby. Staying there is was like a bad "Fear Factor" episode. Things were so bad, I literally don't know where to begin.

Speaking of this night, I can honestly say I will never ever stay at the Howard Johnson in Goodland again! It was just a bad experience. Chris, you were the lucky one to be sleeping behind the hotel in that dirt field that night my friend, count your blessings. Of course, you already knew that ;) LOL

Travelodge Great Bend, KS. Loud, smelly, lucky to have weak wi-fi connection.

Island Park Hotel in Lisbon, ND. Horrid bug problems, wi-fi was very poor and I was reassured 3 times that the comforter was washed without any prompting from me about it's condition. It made me a little leery but the only other hotel had no rooms available. BTW I want to know where the lake was at that location unless it was the sea of wheat around the town.

Greast to see all the responses. No doubt will come in handy for many of us come chase season.

For those of you who have run in to problems so bad that you felt the need to leave, what did you do? Just checkout or give back the keys and say I'm not paying for the room? Just trying to get an idea of how to handle the situation if I ever come across it.

Some conditions may have improved over time, but the following motels were problems for me:

Holdrege, NE Super 8 --- Many years ago on a windy night, banging doors with malfunctioning spring shafts. I was kept awake most of the night with booming doors, as late night guests came and went until early morning.

Limon, CO Super 8 --- Last year, intermittent or no wifi.

Bismarck, ND Super 8 --- Intermittent wifi with best connectivity near the office. Bring your own cable for plug in, since they only have a few for guests.

Richmond, IN Super 8 --- for east coast chasers. My experience and that of another chaser, bugs in the room (unless you like pulling back the covers at 1AM and finding a large centipede on your pillow), plus stained carpet and frayed sheets.

David looks like you need to avoid Super 8's...period..LOL

I have a few
1. Electra Inn - Electra, Tx. Talk about wild.. Its a psychadelic flashback to the 70's with all the multicolor shag carpet and orange and brown furnature you can imagine along with an Archie bunker chair. I also think its the last time the linen was washed and the bathrooms cleaned. Tv's with manual channel nobs and a cashier/clerk behind a bank window with bulletproof glass and a sliding metal tray. Wichita Falls was full up and we had already driven like 600 miles that day plus we were awakend 3 times with large hail and tornado warnings for us. long long night. I and my 2 chase buddies were ready to kill each other by morning...lol

2. Economy Lodge - Dodge City - This used to be an Econolodge but some Indian family bought it and added the "my" since they werent franchised. It has to be one of the nastiest places I have ever been. Used soap in the showers, thousands of roaches, black mold. It got so bad my chase buddies left in the middle of the night to drive to Garden City to find a room (DDC was full up). Not to mention their prices were as high as a Comfort Inn. Also no wifi of any kind.

3. Days Inn - Altus, Ok. - This is by far my #1 worst. It was May 2002 when our group stayed there. Black mold everywhere. My room had smoke stains on the walls where the light fixtures had shorted out. The toilets only flushed if you pulled the chain in the tank but then it would run for like an hr. The bed sheets had sweat stains and the pillow cases still had hair and makeup on them. The carpets were stained and torn and most of the molding had been pulled off and there were holes in the walls. The TV's only had a couple ch. and no remotes. And no soap or shampoo in any rooms. I am amazed they had toilet paper. I called this one into the national chain for sure. havent been back since so maybe its better now.

From now on I am getting pics or video of these places to post. Its hard to believe some of the crap we as chasers see out there. Need evidence...lol

I can't help but wonder what a thread like this does for the chase tour business, when most of the companies' disclaimers read, generally: "we will make a reasonable effort to stay at one of the better-known national chains, but we cannot guarantee it every night."

LOL, sorry. I just had that thought while perusing this thread.

Speaking of however, while doing a tour last June, we did have a rather memorable experience at this dive in Lamar, CO. Thanks to us arriving ten minutes behind the V2 armada, we sat watching helplessly as Bill Reid booked the last respectable-looking place (the guy ahead of us in line). So we found this place (I don't remember motel names) that had a teenage girl managing, who was fighting with some 20-something guy who was either a guest nextdoor to us or some late-night maintenance guy. The highlight of the stay was the bathroom door falling off the hinges when I walked out after my shower. The experience was topped-off by a 10:30am check-out time.

But, we did nail the storm of the day inside a 13Z no-risk SPC outlook zone ;-)

May 23, 2007 I think. I think it had to be in Shamrock TX. And I think it was called the Texan or Big Texan or something like that. Seemed it was just west of 83, just south of the interstate. Couldn't find anything in Canadian so it was either try Pampa or go to I40. Neither were the direction I wanted to go, toward home. But I wanted a damn room and not to drive into flooded areas or dataless storm areas in nw OK. So sucked when nothing was available in Canadian. First thing I tried in Shamrock was already full. Others looked full. I then saw that "place". Looking at the outside of it I should have known it wouldn't be a nicely kept mom and pop type place once in the rooms.

The office was extremely hot and smelly and out comes the Indian owner in a wife beater. He wouldn't say a thing to me. Took my money and handed me a key. $30 should have been a sign too, but really, I thought it was ALL that was left anywhere in TX by now and really really wanted to sleep. As tired as I was, it didn't take long walking around that room to say to hell with that. It was the most depressing thing I'd ever been in I think. Unspeakably bad. Most aren't picturing it bad enough, I know. I left and drove around some more, not even bothering to try and get my money back from that guy. I just took the key with me. I'd have slept in my car if there was nothing else. Figures, there were some rooms at the Econolodge down the street. I got a room there. I checked out of both motels the next morning lol. Gave that other motel my key as if I had stayed there the whole night.

Amarillo had a nice "Camelot Inn" me and some chasers stayed at in 2001 that was "interesting". Not sure if that place is still there or not. That one I wondered not just where the hell any toliet paper was...but where it would even be hung. There was none of either. It was the threshold of a bad motel stay up to that May 23, 2007 stay in Shamrock. It was a HILTON! compared to that place I got in Shamrock. My last apartment was pretty damn cheap and run down, old building above a bakery. This motel was so many levels even past that. But yeah, what does one expect when the office manager comes out in a very dirty wife beater, some kids in tow if I remember correctly. Actually I think the kids were the ones that took the key when I checked out.

WiFi ends up a joke at 50% of the motels, so I won't even go there. Seems so many they have to go and flip the router on and off to get things to work again, and they won't keep up with it. Not an issue now with tethered or usb data now, thank god.

I guess I could come up with more examples to avoid. Roadway Inn in Thedford NE. Not that there are a lot of options out there. Stay there if you like trains every 30 minutes right across the street.

One caution might be cranking the heater and going to sleep. In Broken Bow some recent year as well as in West Yellowstone got woken to the fire alarm going off.

That reminds me and might have been what I was doing. I can't sleep with silence, need a fan or something. My god I can't stand the motels that have the ac/heaters with no fan option. It just kicks off completely when it reaches a certain temp. That had to be what I did at those places. I would about be to sleep and it would shut off. It would get in my head till I was pissed off and wide awake. Only cause I was trying to beat it to sleep. So I'd CRANK ac till it was a freezer. Then I'd bump the heat on and hopefully have enough time with fan noise before it shut off too fall asleep. Trying to beat this didn't work well as it was in your head you were trying to fall asleep. Uggg, I hate finding those motels and seeing those certain types of ac/heat units. Should buy a small fan and stick it in my trunk.

I think it was a super 8 in Bartlesville OK I thought the owner was going to tackle me at my car. Evidently they aren't supposed to give you a receipt if you book online. The only time I booked through motels.com or something. She came flying out and acting like I was in trouble or something, like it was my fault she gave me the receipt. Then gave me the whole rant how she could get fired, yada yada yada. I was like, cause you actually gave me a receipt?! Made more annoying as I actually wanted a receipt! lol that was all around odd.
