GPS Devices w/ 64-bit OS?

With a price down to $50, I went and purchased a DeLorme LT40 puck + Street Atlas USA combo at Best Buy before leaving for Vortex 2.

My intention was to use this GPS device with several applications (Street Atlas, StormLab, etc...) as most chasers do. I was immediately disappointed to find out that the DeLorme Serial Emulator fails to install because I have a 64-bit OS (a problem some of the V2 crew encountered as well). I can't fathom why a major corporation has not updated their software to account for 64-bit OSs which are no longer a niche item, and come installed on most newer desktops/laptops, such as mine. Their phone support was less than empathetic, and they did not envision a fix anytime soon.

Anywho, now that this is going back to Best Buy, can you guys recommend a small, reliable puck GPS with standard NMEA output that can utilize serial emulators like GPSGate, XPort, etc...?

Thanks in advance!
Evan

After asking the same question on this forum, and with serveral recomendations, I'm using the Usglobalsat bu353 with GPSgate and have and ZERO problems. I am using 5 or 6 com ports off of it and it rocks. Note, I am using 32bit Vista, but I think it will be fine on 64bit.

I second the US Globalsat puck. Works great on my 64-bit Vista computer, though be aware that you have to manually move a certain GPSgate file into a system folder to get GPSgate to work on 64-bit Vista. Instructions for doing this are on the GPSgate website.

Evan, really almost any NEMA compatable GPS "mouse" will get the job done. There are many out.

See if you can get a newer 20 channel GPS - they rock! - and will even lock when in the centre of the car - i.e. not right next to the window (dont ask me how to do this)

One I have been using is the Haicom 204E

Get one of these as it is simple, water proof and it just works :)

I paid 70.00 for DeLorme LT-40 puck + 2009 Street Atlas USA comb at office max.
I too was immediately disappointed to find out that the LT-40 puck wont work with my VSPE for splitting the ports to run it and many other programs at the same time.

I am now using using Microsoft Street`s &Trips 2009 and their puck and all is good. This Vista 64bit problem has hit many people and the only fix I found was to split the port with VSPE and to get rid of the LT-40 puck ;)
Life on the chase is all good now! :)

MS Streets and Trips 2009

I know not Delorme but I had the same problem with GPSGate and MS Streets. This worked perfect.

GpsGate for 64-bit / x64 Vista

If you use 64-bit Vista please follow those steps.
(If you are unsure, simply install GpsGate normally first, if Virtual ports does not work - follow those steps)

1. Install GpsGate for Windows 2.6 build 340 (or later)
http://franson.com/gpsgate/download.asp

2. After installation copy the file
C:\Program Files (x86)\Franson\GpsGate 2.0\x64\bizVSerialNT.sys
to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers

3. Exit GpsGate (if running)

4. Run GpsGate as Administrator once. (Right click on the GpsGate icon in the Start Menu and select "Run as administrator")

Now the 64-bit driver is installed. You can exit GpsGate and run it as a normal user.

Heres a post off TVN where I figured it out

Well I now have all 3 of my programs working off one GPS at the same time.
The VSPE works with 64bit Vista.

Now on the other hand, the LT-40 Delorme doesn't work with the VSPE program for splitting the com ports.
Anyone wanting "Delorme 2009 Street Atlas complete with an LT-40 Earthmate puck", I`v got a new one for sale.

I reinstalled 2009 MS Streets & Trips and all is well and running.

Anyone wanting to use the VSPE program

After installing it you have to:
Click on Device
Then Create
At the Device type choose Connector
Choose the Virtual Port you want to use ( I used Com1)
Click Finish
Then once again click on Device type and choose Splitter
In the Virtual Serial port box I choose Com2 and in the Data Source I choose Com8 as that is the port on my computer I`m plugged in to with my GPS.
Poof your done and ready to get started.
Open your programs and choose Com2 as your port for every program you want to use your GPS in.

Well, my trip to Best Buy was sort of fruitful. They didn't want to take the DeLorme LT-40 back because it was software. After finally convincing them that the GPS device is hardware, they still didn't want to take it back, but offered to even exchange me a package containing the Microsoft puck w/ Streets & Trips 2009.

This should work just fine since it exports in NMEA by default. I already have a license of GPSGate, so no problem there, but thanks for the info on VSPE Steve.
