• After witnessing the continued decrease of involvement in the SpotterNetwork staff in serving SN members with troubleshooting issues recently, I have unilaterally decided to terminate the relationship between SpotterNetwork's support and Stormtrack. I have witnessed multiple users unable to receive support weeks after initiating help threads on the forum. I find this lack of response from SpotterNetwork officials disappointing and a failure to hold up their end of the agreement that was made years ago, before I took over management of this site. In my opinion, having Stormtrack users sit and wait for so long to receive help on SpotterNetwork issues on the Stormtrack forums reflects poorly not only on SpotterNetwork, but on Stormtrack and (by association) me as well. Since the issue has not been satisfactorily addressed, I no longer wish for the Stormtrack forum to be associated with SpotterNetwork.

I apologize to those who continue to have issues with the service and continue to see their issues left unaddressed. Please understand that the connection between ST and SN was put in place long before I had any say over it. But now that I am the "captain of this ship," it is within my right (nay, duty) to make adjustments as I see necessary. Ending this relationship is such an adjustment.

For those who continue to need help, I recommend navigating a web browswer to SpotterNetwork's About page, and seeking the individuals listed on that page for all further inquiries about SpotterNetwork.

From this moment forward, the SpotterNetwork sub-forum has been hidden/deleted and there will be no assurance that any SpotterNetwork issues brought up in any of Stormtrack's other sub-forums will be addressed. Do not rely on Stormtrack for help with SpotterNetwork issues.

    Sincerely, Jeff D.

Dr. Gray Slams Gore

He could easily cancel his SS escorts. So yes he is a hypocrit.

2. And nearly everybody agress there is global warming

1: If you were out in public with a high profile message, and there were a number of very influential national opinion-altering organizations (Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, etc) along with untold numbers of local radio talkers of varying degrees of responsibility who were all repeating in lockstep that you are crazy, uninformed, un-American and a self-serving danger to our way of life, would you be willing to drop SS protection?

2: I think the reason the award was given to him is indicated in your statement. When Gore started his mission to publicize climate change, not only was there almost no agreement, but a person could be labled a heretic or an enviro-wacko for even mentioning the topic. Regardless of the accuracy of his science, he has molded it into a mainstream discussion and that is the ultimate worthiness of his work.

If you get a chance to travel outside the US, you will find that Gore is held in much higher regard than here, considerably higher than our current leadership. Thus, the award from a foreign organization is not surprising.

I never said he doesnt need some sort of SS protection. But he doesnt need 3 gas guzzling armored SUV's and a police escort of 4 motorcycles. A small group riding in his SUV would do just fine. Its not like Bin Laden is after him. he is NO threat to terrorists. President Carter travels the world but only uses 5 SS guards total. And then ofcourse is the topic of his massive house which nobody can argue is not in any way GW friendly. So if he is soo concerned about energy use then why not sell it?

As for being respected in the rest of the world. thats only because they havent had to deal with him and his BS for near as long as we have.

And there was concensus on global warming way before he opened his mouth. The planet has been warming in general since the end of the ice age.. thats why it ended.. duh.. and there are natural cycles of warm/cold periods lasting from 10 years to 100 years BUT..That it is worse now than in previous warmups and that is is mostly manmade is still very much open for debate. His award was pure politics. Much of the data he cites has already been debunked but some people have agendas and use powerful organizations to help them seem legitimate. People you named that said he was crazy or uninformed didnt mean about GW itself but the cause of it. Gore is not any kind of scientists and has to go by what he hears from others and what his agenda is which has always been the environment and anything that can help his cause along those lines such as reduced oil use and reduced damage to the environment he will champion whether its based on facts or not.

I recommend a little overseas travel to qualify your first statement.

I don't recall a period of public consensus on GW before he began his publicity on it. I do remember the topic being laughed at or shouted down on a regular basis.

As for his house---well, it's his house. I'd never argue against any American having the home they want, need or can afford whether I agree with their positions or not. He and his wife also maintain their offices there, so that is some consideration, if small.

I have no idea how SS details are constructed, nor by whose orders, so I have no opinion on the size and equipment of his. I imagine protection for Gore would be more from the OKC bomber/Birmingham clinic shooter type than from overseas terrorists.

I doubt Gore has much control over the specific workings of the Secret Service. Again, it sucks that this issue in your mind and so many others now involves political affiliation and whether you like Gore or not.

I don't think anybody against Gore is using political affiliation or whether they like him personally or not. It simply comes down to the hypocritical nature of his message. He doesn't practice what he preaches....that alone disqualifies him from telling anybody what they should or should not be doing.

Edit: When I say this, I'm meaning people on this board. I know there are plenty of shallow people out there that do use political affiliations in their argument against Gore.

By the nature of science every scientist studying climate change should be a skeptic. I agree with Dr. Gray's arguments against Al Gore because Al Gore is simply a politician who knows absolutely nothing about atmospheric science in general and is basically pulling his "evidence" of global warming anywhere he can find changes, some of which may and likely have NOTHING to do with warming of the climate. My favorite "evidence" are the single events such as a huge flood somewhere, or a large tornado outbreak. There have been and always will be huge floods and tornado outbreaks but one event alone is not going to tell anyone about long-term changes in the climate.

I agree with this post 100%. The main person bringing politics into global warming is the life-long politician Al Gore. And I hear you on people using single events as an indicator for global warming...really makes me wonder at the intelligence of people sometimes.

First, the idea that we have "no idea" what has caused the observed warming in the past century is absolutely ridiculous...we have 90-99% certainty that the vast majority of the warming has been a result of the anthropogenic forcings during that time period. This is well-documented in the IPCC report and in numerous scientific papers in the journals over the last decade. And no, I didn't get that information from Al Gore. It's funny how we can post the scientific evidence over and over again on each thread on GW yet we still get the same ridiculous "we have no idea" posts.

Again, it sucks that this issue in your mind and so many others now involves political affiliation and whether you like Gore or not.

Exactly, I get a kick out of "intelligent" people who base their misinformed personal opinions on a scientific issue (easily refuted with a simple reading of the literature) based on their like or dislike of a politician. To be honest, Gore could go tomorrow and open the world's worst carbon belching plant and it won't change the state of the scientific certainty on anthropogenic-forced climate change.

While reading this whole thread I began wondering if our (the U.S.) ability to deal with and help decrease the potential side effects of GW have been negatively hurt by Gore's involvement. Then I thought about how Gore has brought GW to a more out in front position. I would guess its about 50-50 hurt/help and I would guess the 50-50 runs straight down party (politcal) lines.

90%-99% certainty that man is responsible for the vast majority of the warming??? That is a bold statement to say the least. Are we that capable of sampling everything that influences the earth's climate and establishing records on all those forces, not just recently, but over the last several thousand years if not longer? No. So how you can come up with a matter of fact claim like that is beyond me.

Exactly my point. We have no idea "exactly" what happened thousands of years ago and what the tempurature was to a tenthe of a degree liek we are trying to suggest now. To say that this is 99% manmade is beyond any scientific capability. That is opinion.

And I dont care one way or other what Gore does politically. Its the fact that he spews all this "information" and data and talsk about how we are the cause and we need to change our habits or we all die yet he is one of the worst offenders an is not willing to change him own lifestyle.

As for Secret Service. Ex VPs dont get SS protection. They pay for it an I agree there are nuts out there. probably some anti-gw nuts who would like to take him out...lol.. I am just saying he doesnt need an army using 3 gas hog SUV's to get from his house to a speech. Let alone his private jet. He could fly 1st class and save thousands of gallons of high octane jet fuel each year. Does he???? Nope. He enjoys his privilaged life which he earned but he then has NO right to tell me I am a bad person for driving my car to the local hamburger joint for dinner. That is my biggest issue with Gore. He doesnt practice what he preaches which makes him a hypocrite.. period. If he was GW friendly and did all the things he said needs to be done then he would have alot more respect for at least having an opinion and fighting for what he believes. As of now he is just a mouthpiece.

Get real. Computor modelling of the atmosphere is a study still very much in its infancy.

You nailed that fact. How about those computer models for the last 2 weeks? I seem to recall a lot of people having fits over how many tornadoes they will see last weekend while they were using the WTF and POS computer models.

Just watching to see how bad the models are for tomorrow.

Gaia hypothesis simearth

I do a lot of work with computer simulations including my dissertation.

In the 90's there were a series of computer software called sim....like simcity2000, simlife, simfarm and others

The first with simcity was simearth. The main information about the simulation model was the gaia hypothesis. The earth would always regulate itself naturally. But with Sim Earth you could tinker with the earth models and even the weather on Mars. I loved working with the sims. But sadly, it is too much thinking and kids and many adults are not into that anymore.

But things may change when the ultimate sim comes out soon SPORE.

Gore said he invented the Internet. I wonder if he will say he invented the simulations too.

Gore should have spent more time hypothesizing how to run a good political campaign instead of fooling around with global warming. It might be a combination of man made and earthly effects.

Seriously I doubt Gore can tell the Secret Service what vehicles to drive. They are specially made to be bomb resistant and more. Who cares about facts though? Lets just keep making up reasons to question Gore and the GW issue. Lets just forget about the rise of CO2 and focus on the fact that temperatures at current aren't out of the realm of possible natural temperatures.

Eric, the charge Gore claimed he invented the internet has already been debunked in this very thread. Please keep up.

Michael, the 90-99% number is certainly not a personal opinion. It comes from the 4th IPCC report just issued, which documents the scientific basis behind the statement. You're welcome to read it and tell us what's wrong with it -- scientifically (as in, conspiracy theories just don't cut it).

Doug, using the WRF or GFS to make highly specific tornado forecasts on a specific day is a completely different process (physically and philosophically) than using a GCM to model large scale changes to the climate over years and decades. Apples and oranges, as has been discussed in numerous threads on ST over the past year or two.
