Well phoey... Around 1930z probably would have started north on 63 out of Macon. Knowing that the storms were moving that fast and hoping they would continue to rotate as they crossed the warm front, would hope that the line would get interesting near the MO/IA border. Looks like it will likely be a squall line bust for me however, as the chances of seeing anything aren't very likely.

Frustrating chase for me. There appears to be a data "outage" with this thread

Just northeast of Unionville, MO with the cluster / squall line. More discrete cells noted (before data failure) to the south appear to be too far south (and in bad terrain) for me to catch them. Maybe I should consider going NE (warm front?) ... I think that's what I'll do.

I want to thank you for the time and effort that you devote to these chase threads. I have gone back and played along (after the fact) by myself and found the chase cases to be very educational. I have also been following along with this one, though I am trying to get a feel for it and haven't throw my hat in there yet.

Thanks to all who play along for explaining the conditions that you base your decisions on, too.

I can say for sure only that I would have been in the areas north of STL. Now, what I would have seen is an open question, given the storm speeds, and I'm sure they were rainy.

What Damon said. Given my location, I stood as good a chance of seeing a tornado as I could have hoped for up there in southeast Iowa. But man, what a mess! Looking at those radar images, I'd never have expected so many tornado reports from that area.

I default to warm fronts and triple points east of the Great Plains, but the more discrete storms were well to the south in the area first outlooked by the SPC. This is a case I'm going to reexamine.

I chased this setup, and it was not a pretty one. My chase log.

The majority of the IL tornado reports were brief, rain wrapped spin ups, or after the fact damage reports. I remember Scott Kampas and some of the other IL crew that were further downstream on these storms reported forward flanking wall clouds and tornadoes, in places where you would normally expect a shelf, perhaps spawned by some embedded supercells where the structure all melted together into one big messy line. These storms were also hauling ass, and once you fell behind the line it was game over. Northwest AR and southeast IA were the place to be on this day as they produced long lived discrete, cyclical supercells, but I don't remember how photogenic the tornadoes were.

I remember going into this chase knowing that we would probably get screwed by the Mississippi. Storms were forecasted to initiate west of the MS, and if we intercepted there we knew we would get stuck trying to find a river crossing back across. We also wanted to be on the storms fairly early as we expected a linear transition.

I was chasing with Fabian Guerra and met up with Jerry Funfsinn later in the chase. Jerry wound up crossing the MS and going into MO while we waited on the IL side. Fabian and I avoided crossing the MS but then got stuck behind the IL river, and wound up on a ferry that effectively ended our chase. Don't chase via ferry. Neither of us saw anything that day, whether we into MO or waited in IL. You had to be much further downstream in IL to catch some of the forward flanking action, and again I'm not sure how photogenic it really was.

Nice hole in the LSRs right where I would've been chasing. Would've had a pretty bad chase day. I don't think I've caught the storm of the day in any chase case this year yet! The devil's in the details, and it doesn't help that there's a very poor density of surface observations in Missouri. There was probably some mesoscale detail that I missed that led to this. This is also one more reason for me never to chase in Missouri.

I'll call this one a hit, though I doubt I or many others would have seen much of anything in this mess. I had relocated to La Harpe, IL, for all the right reasons in plenty of time for the 22:20Z Terre Haute, IL, touchdown a few miles to my north. FWIW.

I didn't chase this setup in the reality but virtually I'm happy I did choose south Iowa as target: it seems to be the better place to be in this case.

After checking the report data and the Tornado History Project, it looks like my attempt at catching the Elden storm by running toward Libertyville would have put me in the right place at the right time to catch the cell that spun up an F2 north of Pittsburg, MO. I might have even had a decent vantage to the SW of town as it formed. In all likelihood though, it was probably rain wrapped, and that, combined with how fast these things were moving, I probably would have opted for safety, bailed further south and watched a dark base smothered in rain tear off to the northeast at warp 5.

The main thing I'm walking away with is that this is not a setup I would like to chase. It's a one-shot deal, and even if you're lined up for one storm, you've got just a few minutes with it and then that storm, and the line it's riding are history. I chased this set up with Dick McGowan, Darin Bruinin, and Nick Grillo. We started in Kansas City, where I started in this chase case. Then drove to Columbia, MO and went east instead of North like I did in the chase case. Nick and I almost caught back up to the line near Mattoon, IL. The MS river gave us trouble and the line of storms raced ahead. It was a difficult chase and frustrating at times.

Though in this chase case I possibly would of caught a few tornadoes or at least supercellular storms in SE IA.
