CHASE CASE 14

  • Thread starter Thread starter Matt Gingery
  • Start date Start date
Meade County madness...baseball sized hail and tornadoes ...not as extreme as the action up north but still a good solid chase. Funny thing was that I was doing nowcasting that day and was not chasing...so you would have thought I had latched on to that date sooner.

Yeah, now that the day was given away I see the Meade Co. cell would have worked out fine for me.

Of course, as I hinted at previously further south into TX ended up getting some nice action currently.

I think I'd be likely ending the day with some good stuff, and wrapping things up with a good steak dinner. I was able to film the SW KS storm from birth, and even have 30 minutes of tripoded video of it first starting to anvil.

Even though I feel I should stay put, and the weather alerts don't bear it out, i am dropping south to Woodward, Ok

*Looks at the 23Z update*
Took a short little trip from Coldwater, KS to Meade, KS and currently watching very nice supercell get its act together. Clearly this storm has become surface based which looks very promising for some tornado activity.

*Looks at 00Z update*
Very happy with cell near Meade, KS and will continue the chase...

It seems like the Meade, KS cell has been great to observe over the last couple hours. I'm still not sure what visibility would have been like along Hwy 160/283. The satellite view makes it look like I'm about 20 miles east of the SW quadrant of the storm with no way to get there but through Hwy 160 and a possible coring of my vehicle or ending up on the wrong side of an inbound tornado (if it produces one). Another option is some potentially treacherous, westbound, mud bogged roads closer to the OK border. This is really stressing to me how tricky it could be to find a good vantage point on a cell and have the road network & storm position block my options.

I may have taken some test trips westward on Hwy 160 or along one or two of those alphabet-roads if it helped visibility. If the roads were in bad shape or precipitation too treacherous for my sensibilities, I'd remain on the N-S intersection of Hwys 160 & 283 to see what I can see from there and adjust as the storm evolves.

Missed the last update, but I probably would have stayed in Sublette, so I'm going to try and make it to Ness City, KS. Should be there in an hour and 45 minutes.

... roughly 2245Z.

23Z update:

Moving north out of Ness City, KS. Should be in Trego county just after 23Z and will intercept the storm.

0Z update:

Staying on Trego County, KS storm, on dirt, south of WaKeeney.

Well am on the cell near WaKeeney and it seems like things are slowing down, but was very happy with the results as we took a gamble to leave our original target for the cu field in NW Kansas and it paid off!

Thanks Matt far this another cool case! It's strange because yesterday I was thinking:"sxxt, I guessed the case: it's june 9 05" and I did go and see the archive maps link, but probably I clicked the wrong page and I wasn't able to understand the case:D

Ah June 9th, 2005 - a frustrating day for us Carlsons' as we left Denver an hour late because of a chase partner's flat tire. Then I made the bone-head move to think we had a clear view of the updraft on the Trego center tornado from the west side while the tornado was on the other side of the rainshaft from where we were watching. Once I figured it out we caught the tail end of it but from too far away. doh!

We did see a nice long lived landspout near Gove, KS - did anyone else witness this one?
